Do not forget to claim BCH as well.. You need to enter that btc private key in electron cash wallet to claim Bitcoin cash.

Please always only do that after securing the BTC.
This applies to all of those shitcoins forked from BTC. Secure them from the most valuable to the least valuable.

And use virtual machines for the wallet applications whenever possible.

... since it's an offline wallet then even if your password was written in your intercepted email, it can't be used to unlock your wallet and change its password without also having your wallet.dat file.

Read the OP again:
Back in 2014 i had a wallet.dat file. I saved in an email as well as in a disk. Somehow after few months someone hacked my email and got hold of my wallet.dat file.

OP had stored their wallet.dat in their email... it was hacked... so likely the hacker had access to the wallet.dat Undecided Although it is impossible to know exactly what the hacker did or did not download, the wallet should be considered compromised and coins moved as soon as possible.

Yes but even in that case, the only password the hacker could change was the copy of the wallet.dat that the hacker downloaded from the email server, not the copy on OP's disk, which he does not have access to. Of course they would have access to all private keys regardless and you're right about the wallet being compromised.

Also, this is surprising:
I had my password written there.
...
Till today those coins have not moved.
So, it would seem that the hacker did not realise they had access to the wallet.dat and the password to the OPs wallet??!? Shocked Shocked Shocked

In any case, personally, I would be shifting those coins to a new wallet ASAP...

wallet.dat means you used the Bitcoin Core wallet to store your funds and since it's an offline wallet then even if your password was written in your intercepted email, it can't be used to unlock your wallet and change its password without also having your wallet.dat file.

Having your email with a wallet password written in it hacked is not the same as when a wallet file itself being hacked.  You can check on a block explorer if your address still contains your balance to verify this.

I would like to take out the private key so i could use in the electrum wallet to retrieve those coins. Please help. Jap12
You can extract the private keys (dump it) and use them to a new electrum wallet but you must make sure that the device is clean so as not to lose your money.
Generally, as long as you are sure that you have not sent money and that no one has bruteforce your password for the wallet that was in the email, you are safe. Wait for the sync to finish and enjoy your HODLING power.

Next time, do not share it through the email, I am not talking about the hacking, but the email server may stop or you forget how to access it.

Thanks. Thas a great news. Dont have much but something ialways bettter. That gives me peace of mind now.
Well... If those funds didn't move, that's a good sign... But i'd never have piece of mind untill my funds were moved over to a new, clean wallet... Once your wallet.dat is out there, there might be people distributing it, and others might be trying to bruteforce your passphrase as we speak...

So, my advice would be not to rush things to the point you start making mistakes, but still, you should probably not leave this be... Take action to move those funds to a clean wallet, and don't make the mistake of storing it in the cloud a second time Wink

Yes. Just install Bitcoin Core, replace the wallet.dat with your own.

Note that you won't be able to see any up to date transactions or funds unless you synchronize it either with a bootstrap file or with the blockchain files. I'd advice you to just find a clean computer, import and synchronize it to avoid leaving any funds in it if you're thinking of shifting to Electrum.

The password change applies to the wallet file only. If the password is correct, the wallet can be decrypted, even if your other backups had their password changed. The purpose of doing it offline is for the security but even so, it requires the use of a clean computer that has never been connected to the internet for maximum efficacy.
