As for the OP if you do it right, it is profitable. You have to balance your rewards vs your ad earnings. You need to be different as well, just throwing the basic faucetbox script up on some site will not drive any decent traffic. It's tricky though because if you're rewards are too low you won't receive visitors, thus causing you to earn even less revenue.

Well in the early days the point of a faucet was to give newcomers their first taste of Bitcoin. It was by no means a way to amass a profit.
With that said, there is no way you will make a fortune even with heavy traffic. You will likely break even and in the off chance that you do make a profit, it wont be anything special.
Im my mind, its a good way to get newcomers their first bits and a way for site owners to learn code. A site is only about $10 dollars a year

You'll have to put money from your pocket at beginning until you build good traffic approx 10 k per day.
I'm also having a faucet but have very low traffic and rarely any visitor click on ads but I keep it live for my fun.

the new faucet don't earn because use absurde method to antibot (more click in the page, very hard captcha) , have more invasive ads and low rewards.
Is old faucet like moon, freebitcoin and similar is live and have hundred thousand or active user is because is simply, have a good rewards

Besides, there are lots and lots of faucets out there, I doubt if it can be profitable due to so saturated market.

but how much can you really earn managing/owning a faucet site?
Not a lot I am quite sure. You don't generally see faucets last very long. It will be easier to balance the books when bitcoin price is going down. When price starts to rise, faucets get hit badly and disappear.
i doubt that its profitable to have it unless you pay really really tiny amounts and have a lot of advertisements on the website, the main problem is that people are not interested in faucets
