If you sign up to ZipZap there are thousands of places all over the UK where you can buy BTC:  http://zipzapinc.com/

Localbitcoins is a no brainer, you can pay by bank transfer and get bitcoin within an hour.

Try placing an ad somewhere in public areas with an email address or phone number for sellers to contact you.

Otherwise use kraken or localbitcoins.

You could also check out the currency exchange section in this forum.

Isn't Bitstamp located in UK (it has its address in Berkshire, UK on its website https://www.bitstamp.net/about_us/)?
Why isn't Bitstamp included in the coindesk article? Huh

It's company is registered in the UK but the banks are over in Slovenia. It's still useful, but you must use SEPA (1-3 days) transfer which will come with some currency conversion charges.

Small amounts -> localbitcoin
Large amounts -> bitstamp

how do you go about buying it in the British Isles?

Are you asking or telling?  Cheesy. I've used Bittylicious to get my coins though you pay a small premium.

You could always buy from ATMs. There are quite a few in London, and more around the country:

As above - but if you sign up with Circle the price/btc works out pretty much what you would pay via localbitcoin (when you include fees etc) - but Circle is much much more straightforward IMO.

Have used Bittylicious before and all went smoothly.

Could sign up with Coinfloor but there's delays in transfering GBP now that they have had the faster payments rug pulled from beneath them.
