It's like assembly of a computer. You just need to buy motherboard, cooling etc.
And by the day you get the chips, all the open source DIY projects + Avalon specs will be well advanced and you would by all of it for less than 100$ (for a 16 chips PCB)

What do you mean by build it yourself? Do you have the setup to solder chips to a motherboard, have knowledge of cooling etc...

The answer is in your question. Just follow what you find in post.
You know even Avalon is kind of selling asics chips through the forum. Because they aren't selling that many miners, so you best bet is to buy a few chips.

But Avalon only sells batch of 10k chips (= ~780BTC) http://store.avalon-asics.com/?product=avalon-asic-chips-10000,

So people are taking orders for little buyers. Example: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/group-buy-avalon-asic-chips-sebastianju-batch-6-ordered-closed-187660

I am interested in getting some block erupter mining equipment, either a blade or a few usb sticks.  Why does friedcat only sell on forums and not via his website?

I, like many others, would love to be able to just buy some of this hardware and have it show up at my doorstop.  What is the best way to get my hands on some of that equipment?
