You should be fine with Notepad, and in case it doesn't work you can still easily change the default program to open .conf (or whatever) file.

I'm stuck on how to edit my .conf file for CGminer to get it to automatically connect to my wanted mining pool and to set up backup pools, etc, as windows says it does not know what program to open .conf files with, and I'm scared to opening it with notepad as the option to only open it once in notepad is greyed out and then presumably this will screw up all the other .conf associations on my PC ?

So basically how do you edit a .conf file in windows?

Funny the option "alwas use the selected program..." is greyed out.

Solution to not associate .conf file is run Notepad and file/open and choosing the .conf file

I would suggest Notepad++.  It's great for editing just about any text file.
