I am new to bitcoin.  Never did this before, but it seems all wallet services want your bank information at some point.  Are there any wallets that don't require it?  Don't have a bank account right now.

Supposedly localbitcoins allows you to meet up in person for a Bitcoin exchange. I think you have to register with localbitcoins but probably don’t have to provide bank account information.

I know you that Coinbase does require bank account and other identifying information. I have used Coinbase and it’s pretty easy to set up but it does take a few days to get it all sorted out.

Yes, one way is asking someone who has already money on their wallet and send it you then you just pay them on the cash basis, and some outlet can help you convert your fiat to digital money.

There are some ways to make it totally anonymous, as well as without a bank. For example, here's a list of exchanges where you can remain totally anonymous: https://icoinblog.com/best-anonymous-bitcoin-wallet/, given that you wish to not use a bank account and thus remaining anonymous.

If you don't care about the anonymity, and is just interested in buying Bitcoin without a bank account, check https://www.bitcongress.org/bitcoin/exchanges/buy-bitcoin-without-bank-account/ - you have around 6 different options there. P2P exchanges/marketplaces such as Paxful and LocalBitcoins are always recommended for unique ways of buying Bitcoin, good luck! Grin

You can buy BTC from a friend, no need for bank account just exchange with cash.

However be very careful, make sure you know the person well. Alternatively go to the nearest Bitcoin Meetup (possibly local) and make some friends there.

You'll be up and running in no time.

I assume you want to avoid taxes, which is illegal and I shall not give you any advice in this regard.

As far as I'm aware, avoiding taxes is completely legal. Perhaps you meant to say evading taxes.

Avoiding means choosing a course of action which results in no tax or less tax being due than had you paid no attention to what actions are taxable and how much they are taxed.

Evasion, on the other hand, refers to your reaction to tax which is legally due based on action you have already taken.

The best option for an anonymous-seeking guy like you is to buy Bitcoin from someone you know either just within your local area or anywhere as long as you know the person well. I am sure that as time goes on this can be the practice for many to avoid the additional service charges which wallet services are imposing on every transaction. I am sure there will be some Facebook groups that will sprout just for this purpose. In everything we do online, we have to be careful as scammers are everywhere and so ready to ensnare us all. If you just want to buy and sell bitcoin and use it offline (shops, etc) and don't want to use it online, it can be done anonymously, but it's really hard, and there are only a few merchants who accept bitcoin yet. If you want to buy something online, you need to ship it to you, and in this case, your ID will be connectable with your wallet. Or, you can ship it to a friends' place, but that is also not convinient.

Thanks everyone for replies.  I have decided not to use bitcoin as it's much more hassle than I thought.  Glad I came here to ask questions first, since I never even heard of bitcoin until recently.  Old folks aren't hip.
Yeah you better go and listen to radio using petroleum Cheesy bitcoin is cutting edge futuristic technology not for every one but if you ever changed your mind better to find a local exchange(operating in your country jurisdiction, the ones if try to scam you could prosecute them in court of law) and then give them your bank account and ID though not the PIN and password lol, it's not easy to buy bitcoin using virtual credit cards(especially prepaid ones) unless someone trusts you enough or they might as well accept it but with a crazy fee, like they will take $100 from you and give you $70 in bitcoin.

You could also take advantage of mixing services which their sole purpose of existing is to help and provide clients with total anonymity.

Ps, use blockchain.info for the wallet part.

And you could check out the mixer in my signature for details. don't worry it's safe to click Cheesy

If i got it right, you want to buy some bitcoins anonymously...

The easiest way is using a Bitcoin ATM. Depending on your location, you can even use chipchap services (google for it, no bank account needed but high fees, though). You just deposit the amount you want and voila you get your BTC (in a couple of hours)

In order to get your BTC you have to have a bitcoin wallet. You can download any wallet from this list: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet

Then you can use your bitcoins for whatever you want: Keep it, spend it, or exchange them back in fiat using any bitcoin / debit card. There are many cards to choose from, just read their faqs to make sure they will not ask for any bank details.

Just don't give up the BTC so easily, it might look complicated but once you get to understand the steps, you will never go back ;-)

sounds like you want a bitcoin debit card too to withdraw cash. less hassle than selling to freaks on the street. some don't require verification up to fairly low limits.

this is a good bunch of reviews.

I am new to bitcoin.  I have a place that will pay me a small amount of bitcoins, so I need to get a bitcoin address/wallet.  Never did this before, but it seems all wallet services want your bank information at some point.  Are there any wallets that don't require it?

As in, can I fund them with a Vanilla Visa card (just an example) and then later when I want the money in my hands, can I withdraw to a bitcoin ATM, also without showing ID or giving my bank account info?
Blockchain allows for you to make a wallet w/o showing any ID, however they don't have an exchange.

I highly recommend reading up more on how wallets work before getting too involved with them.

If you want to buy Bitcoin without having to show ID, most of the time smaller exchanges won't require it for a certain amount of money, but then they require it due to regulatory policies of the country they reside in.

Localbitcoins is probably the best exchange for avoiding a lot of ID and being able to fund with cash.

To create a wallet all you have to do is download and run a client, e.g.: https://electrum.org/ (no information is required whatsoever).
[/quote]

You said you didn't understand my question, so I'll rephrase.  For example, Coinbase Wallet asks for your bank account information as soon as you sign up.  Is this the norm?  If not, what are better places to use?
Coinbase is actually an exchange, their wallet services are secondary. There are web wallets which do not require such information to sign up.

Or for anyone else that cares to answer my initial question, let me word it differently.  I want to remain anonymous at all times.
There is no such thing as complete anonymity in these cases.

That means opening a wallet, funding it, buying bitcoins, receiving bitcoins, and converting to cold hard cash so I can spend the money locally in town.  It seems this is not likely.
One does not "open" a wallet; one creates a wallet. 'Buying' Bitcoins is the most problematic part here. You could attempt to find someone dealing with cash e.g. on this website: https://localbitcoins.com. Similarly, cashing out completely *anonymous* is also a problem. I assume you want to avoid taxes, which is illegal and I shall not give you any advice in this regard.

Thank you for all that information.  Lol, no, I am not trying to avoid taxes, but thanks for the laugh.  I was a victim of identity fraud once and simply do not want to link my bank to anything online, if I get a new bank account at all.  But gee thanks for the ridiculous accusation ... some way to start off my experience on this forum, by being insulted for asking the most innocent of questions.

You can use Localbitcoins. Or any face to face P2P transaction involving an exchange for bitcoin. Edit: Oops, I see that was just answered.

Thanks.

This is pure nonsense. The only ones that eventually may or may not require your information are online wallets. They are just a sub-category of a lot of wallets (mobile, desktop, paper, hardware, etc.).

Are there any wallets that don't require it?
Any desktop wallet, e.g. Electrum.[1]

As in, can I fund them with a Vanilla Visa card (just an example) and then later when I want the money in my hands, can I withdraw to a bitcoin ATM, also without showing ID or giving my bank account info?
I have no idea what you're trying to say.

[1] - It is generally recommended that you keep your money on your own machines. If you are purchasing online, say via an exchange, you should withdraw as soon as possible.
