On average it will take you about 4396 years to generate first 50BTC with your CPU. You may wanna look into GPU miners

So, I just started the client and clicked on generate coins. Errr...seems to simple. What am I missing? My computer now is a phenom II x6 1075t with a 6850

You'll need another piece of software to mine with your GPU.
I personally use Kiv's GUI miner - https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/gui-mining-updated-dec-3-with-7970-bugfix-also-supports-stratum-3878
Youll have to configure that depending on what pool your using (or going solo).
The bitcoin client doesnt (necessarily) have to be present on your mining rig, so that button you pressed to generate coins in basically solo mining with your CPU (youll probably never see any payout from that).
