I actually have a USB webcam pointed at my mining shelf, which has a thermometer in its view, which is not the easiest way to achieve what you wanted to, but has the added benefit of being able to remotely view your setup (if you're as paranoid as I am).

I am actually considering this too.

You want to control an AC based on the temperature in the room... that's called a thermostat Smiley  Most ACs have them built in.

I actually couldn't find a portable AC that turns off completely based on temperature, the fan stays running. I'll be using a Wemo to control it based on time/outside temp at least. But additionally I'd like to monitor the room temp remotely.

I assume you have a computer in the room, can't you just buy a USB temperature sensor? It is available for only $15.

Thanks for the suggestions! RPi seems like the way to go. I think I'll try this out: http://www.projects.privateeyepi.com/home/temperature-gauge

What hardware are you running?  Might also be worth looking into Munin http://munin-monitoring.org/.  If you need a hand feel free to PM me.

FUN > ROI
If you're already using a regular computer (why?) you can correlate the HDD temperature with the room temperature fairly well, as long as that HDD is under fairly constant load (as it should be when just playing host to miners) - and there's plenty of monitoring tools for that; especially if you're going to allow remote access so you can mess with things anyway.

I'm going to be moving some of my miners to a small room at my parent's house. I want to be able to monitor the room temperature remotely. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this?

I'd also like to be able to remotely/automatically turn a portable air conditioner on/off based on the room temperature. I'll be using Wemo Insights on the miners to power cycle them remotely when needed.

Phone call.... "MOMMMM WHAT IS THE TEMPERATURE.   Ok please turn on the AC".

Ok real solution raspberry pi and build it will be cheapest solution that you can do remotely.

Sounds like it's time for you to buy a raspberry pi and some relays!
