There should be restrictions in specifically the marketplace digital goods section. Either posting in that forum should be restricted or limitations should be placed on newbie and junior members. For example self moderating option only offered to member or above status. Most forums do not let newbies post in marketplace to limit scamming.

Escrow is good but limited with digital goods since it's hard to prove goods were actually received or you have the risk of fraud funds being used to purchase gift cards.

How to reduce scamming:

  • Use escrow
  • spend some time learning about Bitcoin and the forum environment before diving straight into the market sections
  • do research on what you are buying and from who
  • No matter how tempting the deal, don't go for it unless you are at no risk
  • Ask for signed Bitcoin messages/PGP from long term respected members asking fishy before dealing with them
  • Check to see if who you are trading with has recently changed their password, if so read above ^
  • Don't rely on the trust system, read it as feedback and take it only for what its worth to you.

People who use other forums as examples for why something would or wouldn't work are starting out with a ton of incorrect assumptions. There are plenty of tools on the internet that can help you become anonymous. On forums for discussion about comic books or whatever else, the admins can probably make statements about how their banning is permanent, and IP banning is the end all solution. Here we know better. I'd be willing to bet that at least 90% of users here wouldn't even need to look up a guide on how to completely fool any forum identifying systems we could put in place. Here, banning pretty much means your account is thrown away, and we will be on the lookout for your other accounts. It really doesn't mean that the user is gone for good never to come back.

Of course they will still make money from the idiots who wont or cant read my warnings BUT it DOES hurt them and they have contacted me saying so .

I understand your point about the big bold red letters but its the way im gonna keep going . I might tone it down a bit but im gonna keep doing it .

If I run into scammers then im gonna bombard their threads and i dont care what it looks like .

Just wish there were more like me and this forum wouldnt be the shithole for scammers it has become .

Ive been scammed maybe 4 times for low amounts

So every time I see these scumbags selling the same stuff them im not sitting back and letting anyone else get scammed.

Do you understand the reasons now why im commenting on EVERY post they do or would you rather I keep quiet and let the scamming scum on this forum have a free reign to do whatever they want and get away with it ?

I understand the purpose, but the execution is horrible. You could continue bumping their threads with huge red font in all-caps saying, "SCAMMER"... or alternatively you can write a post (bold is fine, it also captures the eye but doesn't strain it as much) and provide a reference to past scams that they've been a part of. Wouldn't that be better, instead of looking like you're trolling?

Just a simple little
Code:
[url=link][/url]
goes a long way.

Without proof and just words, what help are you to potential victims?

What looks more reputable?

SCAMMER THIS SCUMBAG IS A SCAMMER LOL WHAT A LOSER

or

This user is a scammer. Do not trade with them.

This thread shows the past trade between californiacauliflower and redfiretruck, where redfiretruck scammed 0.01 BTC.

Avoid buying any services from redfiretruck.

Obviously example names, but you should see the point. At least a little? (The second example wasn't too great, but obviously if you're trying to prevent scams you would have more time to fine-tune it.)

Is your accusations really gonna stop their sales to full extent?? Maybe you think it as YES but it is not. There are many bunch of fools still go for it even if the seller is red marked and later they come up weeping out with a scam accusation thread. There are many who go without escrow for newbie guys.

I appreciate your tries to warn interested buyers out there but the main reasons is that users does not feel about their money even if it is little or high. Some feel it while some guys fell for it. More users fell for it and more encoraged they are for their next scam.

I find it unbelievable the amount of scumbag scammers on this forum . Im relatively new here by 7 month .

TWO ........... yes 2 things would drastically reduce scamming on this forum

1 - STOP THE SALE OF ACCOUNTS ! !

Makes a mockery of the status of accounts . Some scammer can buy an account with great trust and scam the hell out of people .

Banning accounts would do nothing because they would still happen just behind closed doors and would lead to even more scams when naive users believe account sales don't go on and can trust anyone based merely on rank.

2 - STOP PEOPLE USING SELF MODEERATING POSTS ! !

99% of these are used by scammers so they can delete accusations and complaints .

It's true that self-modded threads are exploited by scammers but they're also usually red flags to use caution. However, self-modded threads are also good for legit users to keep out trolls, spammers and scammers. In fact, you're starting to look like a perfect example of this. Looking at your post history it seems you have a penchant for spamming about how you've been scammed by various users x amount of months later in an attempt to get your money back which is starting to look a bit like extortion to me:

DONT LISTEN TO THIS SCAMMING SCUMBAG
HE SCAMMED ME FOR $20 FOR HIS XBOX INFO THAT DIDNT WORK
NOW IM RUINING HIS SALES HE ISNT HAPPY
ALL HIS INFO HE SELLS IS SHIT AND CAN BE FOUND FOR FREE ON INTERNET

SAVE YOUR MONEY
STOPPED WORKING 7 MONTHS AGO
YET THIS LOSER STILL SELLS IT LOL DESPERATE

Ive been scammed for $1 ! !   Yeah thats ONE DOLLAR ! ! !

So im gonna do my mystic Meg impersonation and say - You will make no sales .

3 reasons .

1 - No vouch copies will be given as you arent giving away free shit you said

2 - You are a new member with no trust and can disappear with the money easy

3 - You attitude stinks . You are trying to sell something here which is HIGH RISK and you are talking to people like they are scum

You wont sell any here and it serves you right .

THIS SCAMMER TOLD ME HE WOULD HELP ME EVERY STEP OF THE WAY TO SET UP MY TV FOR IPTV .
I KEPT ASKING HIM BEFORE I PAID IF I WOULD GET HELP AND HE SAID YES NO PROBLEM I WILL HELP YOU .
ONCE I PAID HE TOLD ME TO GOOGLE IT ! !  YEAH THANKS FOR THE HELP .
I WAS AWAY FOR A FEW MONTH BUT IM BACK NOW AND HE WONT REFUND ME KNOWING HE DIDNT HELP ME AND KNOWING I NEVER USED THE SERVICE I PAID FOR .

AVOID THIS SCAMMER ! !

OMFG !!  ZOOMER SCAMS ME FOR $1.50 AND THEN GOES AROUND CALLING OTHERS SCAMMERS ? ? ?

DOESNT GET ANY MORE PATHETIC THAN THIS

YOU BETTER LOCK EVERY POST YOU DO SCAMMER

SCAMMED ME FOR $1.50

ACCOUNT LASTED ONE DAY

REFUSED REFUND LOL

NOW HARRASSES ME BY PM EVERYDAY

Now, I guess some of those might be genuine complaints but I'm not really sure why you continue to buy such wares from people here then complain about them not working several months later. So, are you genuinely getting scammed all these times or are you buying shit for cheap then trying to claw your money back months down the line by trolling sellers into refunding you? Regardless, I'd stop giving them your money if I was you.

I dont even question wether they are legit or not anymore . In my eyes if you do a self moderated post then you are a scammer .

Yup. I don't think there's any need to clamp down on it myself. That alone is enough of a red flag.

I suppose less worldly members might get caught out by it though. Perhaps there should be a larger message at the top of a self moderated thread letting people know about the possibilities along the same lines as the newbie warning via PM.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves here, many people like myself use the self moderation option to delete any unnecessary spam post made in their thread, it makes the thread cleaner for those who want to do business, what they can do is limiting the self moderation option to people who are full member or higher

I just saw a self moderated thread started by you and you know what my first thought was?

"Oh shit, did Your Point is Invalid get hacked?"

Anytime I see a self moderated thread in the currency exchange or digital goods section it looks like a scam attempt, whether you feel that it is or not is another story. For every legitimate case there are (at least) 9 illegitimate cases.

I understand why you'd want to delete spammers, but my opinion is that self-moderated threads do more harm than good and should be eliminated as an option.

Account sales are even worse, and y'all know where I stand on that.  People just need to be really careful who they deal with on this forum and everywhere else.  You just can't trust people here, and that's why escrow and collateral are necessary for trades and loans, respectively.  People get burned over and over, but it seems like noobs don't learn.

Mods and staff won't do anything, I don't think.  This has been brought up like 1000 times before.  It's up to the community to police itself, so we all ought to be liberal with the red paint.

I think the only way that we can do is to inform newbies about scamers and list of sites and scammers reported directly into staff of this forum.. so that anytime they can decide to ban those people..

I also have reported many self moderating posts by many different people MANY MANY times and nothing gets done .

Surely getting a bit of spam is better than allowing these scamming scumbags free run of this place ? ?

As for selling accounts if the mods want to give me power to delete any posts i see selling accounts i will gladly donate my time to do this but i know it wont happen .

Something needs to be done or this place will become known as an easy place for scammers to come and rip people off . I think its close to this just now .

if you find people abusing the self moderation post you can very well report the thread to an admin and they will sort it out

I have reported a scammer several times who uses the self moderating threads to remove people warning others about him scamming and the mods have done nothing.

100% agree with you there. I don't see why self moderating threads are even an option.

if you find people abusing the self moderation post you can very well report the thread to an admin and they will sort it out .have you checked the announcement threads, they are maintained by the posters and they must have the rights to remove inappropriate post to make the thread clean and make their product visible.

public selling of accounts can be stopped if the admins wanted to but people will find a way to sell it ,IP banning is possible but how would you stop dynamic IPS ,consider banning a series of IPs who are creating trouble but in that series genuine people might come .so these are the difficulties admins are facing regarding IP bans

How would mods/admins do this with the scale of the forum now? Also why should they care? That's a lot of extra time and resources and people will still sell accounts, just not with escrows and not on this forum.

By banning the accounts and ip's of scammers, doing nothing just encourages more people to scam because they know nothing will be done and they will get away with it.

Most other boards do it and the amount of scammers on those is almost zilch.

These 2 are probably the easiest for the mods to start with . Yeah people will still be able to buy accounts but at least they wont be as readily available as they are just now with people selling 3 or 4 different status accounts .

Dont think anything will change to be honest but its my opinion and something needs to be done here FAST !
