rescan is for when you have transactions that got goofed up.

You may want to try manually adding some nodes to your bitcoin.conf file:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Running_Bitcoin#Bitcoin.conf_Configuration_File

Some ISPs block IRC by default (which the client uses to find peers) as it is also abused by botnets.  If you are on an uber ghetto network like a university wireless lan you may need to talk to a network admin about whitelisting some outgoing ports.

It is back to its old self again.  I can not get a connection.  Sad

Maybe the rescan was only a partial solution.  I shut down my anti-virus but still no connection.  I try different options in the client- with or without proxy, with or without UPnP, etc.

If there is a thread online here that might clue me in please point me in that direction.  I have tried searching with no luck.  It's making me batty!

and for windows?

Find your bitcoin shortcut, copy it, paste it to the desktop.  Open the preferences on it and add -rescan to the end of the target.

Other option is to open the terminal and cd to the bitcoin.exe and run bitcoin.exe -rescan

Open terminal (type terminal in spotlight or navigate to Applications -> Utilities).

Code:
/Applications/Bitcoin.app/Contents/MacOS/bitcoin -rescan

You may need to change the path if you moved bitcoin.app from the application directory.

I need to -rescan to try to get a transaction to show up, but everywhere I look it just says "use the -rescan switch" etc., never actually explains how. Could someone please give me a step by step instructions on how to rescan on Mac OS X.
