That's a completed miner (ASIC in your terms), based on HashFast's old Golden Nonce chip. That's a pretty old chip, four dies on a single substrate, BGA package, bit of a nightmare (needs some serious cooling) but their hardware's been popping up somewhat cheap after they had to liquidate assets (bankruptcy).but let's not get out of topic here ,

Step 2: Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, laptop, desktop, etc. should all work with the result of that integration if you set it up right and either leveraged an existing mining protocol (e.g. the old Icarus one) or wrote your own for mining software such as cgminer/bfgminer.

The bit between () doesn't make sense; the chips ARE the ASICs There are better options - but you'll be in the same situation as with the old BitFury chips: you can't easily source them.

I try to keep that somewhat up-to-date, but manufacturers often need poking to get a straight answer out of them on whether or not they sell chips (and the answer tends to change based on how big your wallet is). I think the only webstore-style sales are currently of SFARDS' SF3301 (a BGA part - be certain of your skills before even going near that) via dualminer.
There's a small hope that Bitmain will be selling their BM1385 to interested parties at some point - but at this time, no such luck.

Nothing wrong with playing around with them... problem is getting them. I've taken to salvaging them off of larger boards for the odd repair job / upgrade from rev1. But yes, they are old and somewhat inefficient. Too bad BitFury stopped making chips available (28nm or future 16nm).
Old chips, not very efficient by current standards. Unless you are just wanting to play around with them, or have VERY cheap electric, not worth messing with any more.
