I have a doubt of using Tor.

When using Tor you got to close all the browsers, Thunderbird, etc? Or can you get all this applications opened at the same time?

How can i keep my bookmarks during the Bundle Update?

TOR browser bundle has standalone firefox broswer .

Does it come with any risk of open port that may be listening to some remote malicious service ?

TOR is safe to use , you need not worry .

Just have to watch your exit nodes, for possible man in the middle attacks.

TOR servers can be run by anyone. There are groups who want information by any means possible, this includes secret agencies but also others.

Average Joe would be crazy to run a tor exit relay node.  All the "bad traffic" would be linking to his IP and potentially cause a legal nightmare.  Running a regular relay node however is supposedly alright.

FROM TorProject
Quote
Should I run an exit relay from my home?

No. If law enforcement becomes interested in traffic from your exit relay, it's possible that officers will seize your computer. For that reason, it's best not to run your exit relay in your home or using your home Internet connection.

Instead, consider running your exit relay in a commercial facility that is supportive of Tor. Have a separate IP address for your exit relay, and don't route your own traffic through it.

Of course, you should avoid keeping any sensitive or personal information on the computer hosting your exit relay, and you never should use that machine for any illegal purpose.

How to use VPN ?

First if you want a real VPN you must pay for it. Free VPN are dodgy.

DO NOT use hidemyass.com (a popular free VPN), they sell information to the NSA.

10 reasons to use a VPN

How and why use a VPN

Sorry for being so noob in this field... but I just want to know ... Can we use TOR using some web interface, e.g. hidemyass.com ?

Yes, this is possible but I assume you want to use tor for anonymity.

In general this is the idea of TOR:
Quote

You always want to use encryption, because the actual data going over the line may link to you. And so you do not want to connect in plain text to a web interface, where the web interface connects to TOR. The web interface may contain a backdoor, making you not anonymous.

Instead use tails https://tails.boum.org/  or the tor browser bundle https://www.torproject.org/.

Another option to be anonymous would be to use VPN services. You could get several VPNs and connect one to the other. This is not free however, it is generally much faster;

Quote
When surfing with TOR is it completly anonimous?

It depends. The final node know what unencrypted communication (plain text data).
For example if your final node is skype:

Quote

You must realize that al though the communication going over the tor network, with skype all data is being recorded, stored and analyzed by microsoft & friends. (Skype contains lots of spyware, you can see it when looking in the data files which you can find in \%AppData%\Skype\   you can open these files simply with notepad. In addition there are the PRISM files leaked; ). If you have a conversation "Lets meet in LA next Tuesday 2pm" they know that, despite you running it over the tor network.  So the final node is very important. Just using tor does not mean you are anonymous, but you are harder to find than using nothing.

I heard some the TOR servers are run by secret agencies of multiple countries... true ?

Hi,

BR,
Gondel
Mostly yes. Only the great hacker or the NSA would find you using a backdoor.
I heard some the TOR servers are run by secret agencies of multiple countries... true ?
And... if one encounter a flash file using TOR browser, does not it open up his/her IP ?

The risk exist but is very low. If you fear this case you can connect to TOR using a VPN.

That's hard to say if there is any that are or not. I'm sure it's possible and I think it's something they'll try to do if they haven't already. The NSA did actually infiltrate and take over one of the TOR hosting server companies late last year I think though.

Dont we have any website offering this service ? I cant install TOR in my office network. The LAN administrator wont approve.

For those that do not have admin access to install programs, I think there was a portable version of TOR which was created by ThePirateBay.org guys. It is called 'PirateBrowser'

Download from http://piratebrowser.com/

Quote
It's not intended to be a TOR Browser, while it uses the Tor network, which is designed for anonymous surfing, this browser is ONLY intended to circumvent censorship.
The Tor network is used to help route around the censoring / blocking of websites your government doesn't want you to know about.

go to the tor project, download the tor bundle and start to use. This way simple. Disable Javascript if you really really need to stay anonymous, and depending of what kind of activities you wanna engage, read more privacy guide(you can find some on the Hidden Wiki and around the Internet, including the Tor Project Itself)

doesn't the tor bundle include the disable all scrypts option? so you don't need to disbale javascript separatly don't you ?

I feel like tor is used more of illegal stuff than anything else, drugs weapons, and child porn are prime things happening there, also money laundering, getting hitmans and hackers ..... of course there are people that use it just to protect them self from all the drama happening nowadays and to preserve annonymity but right now I feel it's mostly about illegal stuff...

Sorry, but most of that stuff you said isn't as bad as the rest of the Internet. There's some sites you can't even access Tor with. Down there, below Tor, you find Hardcore CP, hardcore gore, Line of Blood, hard drugs, rare animal trade, poaching, bounty hunters, Assassination Box, Hidden Wiki, banned videos, movies, and books, hardcore rape CP, hardcore snuff CP, group CP, scat, etc.

Trust me. Tor isn't all that bad compared to that.

isn't all these available on TOR? pretty sure they are ....., not saying that TOR is bad in it self, it's the usage, and it is being abused, and CP should be punished severely to deter people from doing so !

horrible.  lets make the threat of CP punishable by death.  but the actual crime benign.

I'm so thankful that I've never come across CP on my adventures there. But I have come across gore, and The Line of Blood.

It's hard to bust anything going down there. Those sites have two hundred times more security then Silk Road, or any Blackmarket. Even hearing somebody mention a Line of Blood is pretty scarce.

You can go on Tor for pretty much everything, except some sites do block tor for specific reasons.
Just make sure you have Firefox, then go to https://www.torproject.org/download/download-easy.html.en and download it.
After that extract to a folder and open it. Then tada it will open within a few seconds and now you're on Tor!
No need for VPN or Proxy because it's Tor obviously, browse safely and make sure to keep away from stupid stuff such as cp, hitmans and shit. I use Tor when I wanna go on my certain emails that only can go on during on Tor or sometimes the hidden wiki just to browse what services they have.
Have fun Wink

Why would you want to use IP hider on a TOR browser if It's already anonymous in Itself? Bad side of Tor is that you can't download flashplayer or other programs like that , that are really useful and helpful.

I'm sorry if I'm asking too much... but just getting inquisitive.

From the discussion above, what I understand is TOR works in a client server model. We download the client and that connects us to TOR servers which gives us anonymity by hiding our IP. Now my question is, who run these TOR servers ?

It's just a network much like the internet.

TOR nodes are run by many organisations and your IP is hidden before many nodes . But any flash plugin can easily track your IP as long as you don't disable Noscript.

You mean, to access .onion sites? Use tor2web. Note that this provides no anonymity whatsoever, it merely enables you to access .onion sites without Tor.

I dont mean to use .onion sites. I just dont want certain sites to log my public IP, whether I am using them from office or home.

Dont we have any website offering this service ? I cant install TOR in my office network. The LAN administrator wont approve.

Instal it on a CD-R or USB and try boot it directly from there but maybe you shouldn't be using tor at work.

Sorry, CD/DVD drive and USB ports are disabled and to use them we require permission. So cant use from these.

Then it doesn't look like you'll be able to use tor.
