What's the difference between 8 pin to 2 6+2 pin and 6 pin to 2 6+2 pin? I cant seem to find the first one in my country at all. Would the 6 pin to 2 6+2 pin work too? What's the actual difference?

A 8pin connector is rated up to 150w and a 6pin is rated to 75w.

If you had a 6pin connected to a splitter with x2 6+2 and you did use both 6+2's you could draw up to 300w through a connection designed to handle 75w.

These numbers are why you can use a 8pin to split into 2 6pin but not the other way around.

This is not safe

I'm fairly sure that each cable had 6 to 2×6+2 and not 8 to the same thing but 8 pin carry more wattage than 6 so it's safer you want to use an extended maybe?

Kinda old but I registered only to help out.

You HAVE to plug all 8+8 pins on a FTW/FTW2 1070 for it to work properly. If you try 8pin (psu) to 8+6 (vga) like you might on other cards -
Zotacs 1070s usually work with 8+6 for example - you will get an Error 43 at the Device Manager.

If you don't have a 8 to 8+8, buy one.

Took me 3 days to figure that out, between trying different drivers, risers, PSUs, even with the adapter that comes with the 1070s in the box it doesn't work.

I've never seen this info anywhere. If you don't give it enough power/plug in the correct way, BIOS will recognize it, Windows will recognize, drivers will be installed without any problems, but Error 43 will come upon Device Manager and you won't be able to do anything with that GPU.

I am fairly sure this is not safe to split on a regular domestic PSU as you could, at some points, be drawing 250W+ through a single 8pin which are only rated to 150W.

I think this is a fire/rig damage risk, you best be sure you know how much current is being drawn and the rating of the wires etc before you try splitting 8pins connectors.

The MSI Gaming model of the 1070 is reported to have a TDP of 230 watts (that is the only 1070 model with 2 power connectors that I am aware of).
The second 8 pin PCI-E power to them is NOT optional.

MANY 1070 cards have a TDP that is quite a bit higher than 150 watts.

Even though I never run my 1070s at higher than 150.  I have a 1070 starts 180w and still run them under 130w.

Yes usually you run them between 110W and 150W (depends what you mine) but without both plugs (8+6) connected you even cannot start and if you don't limit the power somehow they can easily climb above 200W and if your PSU cannot handle that you get in trouble.

It says that each 1070 requires 150w that would be 900w and what about the power consumption of the other components? You don't wanna reach the max and blow out the psu with all your gpu's with it right? Yeah get those cables if you are planning to go forward with that psu but my recommendation is getting a 1200w minimum or two 750 if you can like link them together (not sure how you do that but I've seen people doing it) and get a platinum or gold efficiency. You don't wanna go cheap on the psu but buy expensive 1070.

http://www.parallelminer.com/product/hp-1200-watt-power-supply-kit-for-gpu-mining-platinum-94-zec-dash-eth/

Get a 2nd PSU and power your GPUs (not risers) from a large server PSU. Connect Mobo, CPU, risers, etc using your 1000w, and offload the GPU power to the server PSU.

Hello I want to try 6 gtx 1070's ftw

I am using a EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G1 psu right now
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438019

I have two 1070 cards so far, each card takes 2 x 8 pin plugs. if I use one separate cable for each psu vga port to gpu I will only be able to run max 3 cards? Is there some other way to run them? is there a cable splitter that I can run 1 vga split to two 8 pin to gpu

my psu has

6- vga 8 pin ports

2- cpu 8 pin ports

3- sata 6 pin ports

2- perif 6 pin ports

2- cpu 6 pin ports

thanks

not sure if you can leave one free but it should be one 8-pin and extra as optional.  8-pin provides 150w each and the 1070 is 150w max unless you free electricity and unlimited warranty.  you should never run 1070s at 122% tdp 24/7 mining.  most miners run 1070s at 120w having 2nd 8-pin does nothing.

No the 1070 is the most effective at around 120W, the 1000W is sufficient for any 6x1070 rig. The additional pull that you get from FTW version is quite useless for mining.

6 x 1070 with just 1000W PSU? you will have to undervoltage the cards heavily and limit the power not to shred the PSU directly Wink

You will need 12 x 8pin (if each card requires both 8-pin to be connected) and your PSU has just 6 - there are split cables but you might overload the port on the PSU with them so i would better look for a PSU where you have 12 x 8 pin connectors to be on the safe side.
