Steemit is about posting blog posts or commments. When people upvote them you get a certain amount of cryptocurrency from their upvote. It depends on how much steempower they have then they upvote you and how much voting power they have.

Someone with 10,000 steempower(worth about 15,000 USD) can upvote you with 100% voting power and you would get about $2.20 or so. Depends on how much the price of Steem is worth too for how much you get.

When you are brand new you have barely anything so your upvotes are either a penny or two.

Post good content and keep at it and people will upvote you.

Steemit pays both the content creators and the people who upvote thus helping to curate the best content available on the site (The more Steem Power Units you have, the more your curation vote will count). Otherwise it is easy to abuse the voting system.

There is Steem, Steem Power, and Steem Dollars. You get paid for your content in Steem Dollars which you can convert to Steem and withdraw or you can earn interest by holding your Steem Dollars or you can exchange your Steem Dollars for Steem Power thus earning a substantial amount if Steem price increases in the future.
