The other solution is using OP_return. OP_return is a script which indicates a transaction as invalid. One can include messages in hex data for up to 80bytes. You can use coinb.in to try this feature. Go to https://coinb.in/#newTransaction and select advanced option. Remember to include another output that has hex messages as the address.
