Yes since you put in 240 usd as  a price and the letter does not mention any price.   But to be fair you did get a letter which was better then me as I got no reply at  all.

I told them I wanted to do a group buy with 30, 50, 100  as various points to start from.

I think it may be more vaporware .  I will hope for the version 6 just in time for Christmas. Roll Eyes

Did you get a letter from Avalon? Or is this post just a joke?

Am I looking like a joker?

Now the Avalon 6 release later this year interests me!  2+ Th/s 750 watts at the wall and ultra silent?? I can only hope.

I wouldn't hold my breath. They haven't  provided a price for such a device. How would $1250 grab you?

I didn't think so.......  Smiley

$240 is insane.
$100 would be way too high.
$40 might be almost reasonable - at least they'd have a chance at ROI before the halving next summer makes them worthless.

Way too high for an old-gen product.

well it is the current gen chip.

it does .4 watts

no one sells better then .4 watts  except sidehack usb stick.

Now the funny Russian friend above has no idea of price. (he was joking about that letter)

my guess is 60 usd a unit.

I must be out of the loop as a guy buy seller since I have not been contacted and iTop says he is selling.

NOW  iTop wants 3375 for a shipped s-5+  and bitmaintech wants 2473 for the s-5+ shipped.

So iTop may want a shit ton of mark up if he sells them. but maybe I am wrong.

I am sorry that I was not contacted to try to run a group since early July, but  I know avalon must have their reasons for using iTop.

No I have not been contacted in weeks. No replies to my followup emails. So this is pretty much dead in the water for now.

Today's letter:

Quote
Right now we don't have any Avalon Minis in stock.  If you need a large amount of Minis, we can
produce these for you in 3 weeks. As for the price, price is determined on the base of quantity.

The price for each unit itself (without shipping and any other expenses) will be about $240 USD. My answer to such an inconceivable price:

Quote
No way. Last price for Bitmain's S5 is 352 USD. If your Avalon4 Mini can only hash at 78 Gh, the price for it should be at least 14,8 times lower than 352 USD, i.e. 24 USD. All right - let it be 30 USD just because it's a new equipment and it's a bit more efficient than S5.

The pricing here is roughly on parity with 8-9 Compac USB miners and a hub. This would no doubt be easier to administer, but the $240 price doesn't help that. Compared to a "New Rbox" it's lower power draw, and a lower hashrtae, for roughly twice the price of the R-box.

I am sure I'll pass. Thanks for checking Phillip.

$240 isn't just a bad price it is a rip off.  There is no explanation for that price when the big brother 4.1 was only roughly twice as much yet well over 10 times more powerful. What. The. Actual. F.

That's hardly a suprise, every avalon retail product (since the first) has been months behind the competition in terms of effeciency, and priced way above what anyone else is charging.

Apart from an odd machine for those that like to have a new toy, I expect the only real sales they have are from volume buyers in china who must get a better deal.

I understand it, but as a private buyer I can't imagine why should I ever buy a 78 Gh machine for 240 (+50 or 60 USD for shipping). It's a madness. I can buy S3 for that sum, and it will be 5-6 times faster.

They wouldn't be able to price it at $24 any more than GekkoScience Compac could be put on the market for $5 without incurring major losses.  Economics of pricing don't work that way, even if our wallets would love for that to be the case Smiley

In the mean time, they're working on the website - they just added some official photos; http://ehash.com/product/avalon4-mini/

Yeah or to add, great little device to run at the office since power draw is so low, good solo lotto ticket

yeah  if some want to run a radio in the office and are allowed some may want to run this device instead.

At the lower watt setting  of 30gh and 12 watts  no boss will notice or care. only 9 kwatts a month

Even the high watt settings of 78 gh and 33 watts so what. only 24 kwatts a month

Now put in an  full sized avalon 4.1 at 900gh and 480 watts even though it is quiet the boss may not like you using 360 kwatts a month

What exactly is the point of buying this?  The power is so low, it's pointless.

your understanding of hobby mining is lacking.

Does not matter anyway since I am getting no info from the builder and he is about 10 days past promised sample date.

I don't want to be insulting when I say you don't understand hobby mining just truthful as I see it.

A longer explanation would be this.
This item would cost under 3 dollars a month to run.
It would be quiet.
It would not be hot.
You can point it at  a solo pool like ck's and have a chance at winning an entire block at a very low cost in power.
It is not about turning a profit it is about a hobby item.

If you are in college it would run for free in a dorm.  May never hit a block but cost to run it would be zero.

Some would say power theft but I would say no just a different form of entertainment at a one unit level I would not feel guilty saying do it in your dorm.

While not strictly on topic, the fraction of a thread  exposes something about Bitcoin that I had never thought of before. We all get so wrapped up in "securing the network", and a "51% attack", and "too much centralization", we may have lost sight of the bigger picture.

Maybe the biggest threat is actually making peoples Bitcoin unavailable by impairing the ability to process transactions and use their "money". Even if my wallet is "safe", if I can't freely send and receive Bitcoin, that would really make Bitcoin a much less useful currency wouldn't it?

Sounds kinda like when the villain in the James Bond movie 'Goldfinger' was going render the gold at Fort Knox unusable by exploding a nuclear device. The USA was almost certainly still on the "Gold Standard" at the time, so it might have made sense.

Yeah DDOS would force private closed pool's  which surely lead to fucked up shit happening.

Back to the thread no news today.  This is to be expected as I was told late July for the demo/review piece.

I'm in notlist3d's camp. Interested, but it has to make sense from an ROI perspective.

Right now there just isn't enough info. But once the price and and other details are clear, hopefully it will make sense, because they look like fun.

Fun helps.  Quiet will help.  It could be an office miner.  And no will notice it as it will be quiet small and draw under 35 watts.

I think most of us are in agreement it could be a fun miner.  Just all depends on the price.

Even though it is a mini, I have to be able to justify it in ROI math.  So guess we will see as time goes on.

Roi always tough nut to crack.  But I did not think my 4 s-3's would be earning money  1 year later.  My batch 1 in my low power spot are still good to go.

I thought network would be over 100 in diff by now and it is only at 51.

I just want to see a chance of it.   If I put in the price and it shows a year or something with no difficulty increase then it is a no for me personally.   If I see chance of ROI yes I do normally take a risk as I enjoy mining.

That is one thing about small miners in past a lot of time you pay more per hash then getting a bigger miner with more power.  A lot of time smaller hashing units were hard to justify.  Just a lot of parts for less chips in some cases.

I spliced something up like that to run my old R-Box.  So that will do I suppose, although hopefully they have something better than a dc plug.  I guess it all depends on price.

Fingers crossed they ship it with at least a power brick.  Even if you don't use it, its nice to have as much as possible included in the box.

yeah but the brick will cost in shipping and price.

I an not sure what they will do.  My guess is no brick.

FUN > ROI
I'd actually prefer not having them ship it with a brick.  If they do, you're bound to get just about the cheapest they could source, adds to shipping costs, saddles you with a power brick that you're probably not going to use (I have 18 laying around from various products), etc.  Not to mention the whole mains power plug concerns (reason for U3s not coming with that end).  Same applies to USB cables.  I have a whole box full of mini, micro, A and B USB cables of various reliability (some are power-only, some use too thin wires for the length and have peripherals drop whenever they need a bit of extra oomph) from products that include them when I've already got good quality ones.  For me, just the miner would be ideal.
( And I'm interested, of course, but I'm in Europe, so don't add to tally Smiley )

Depending on price, I'd buy 2 to 4 of them.  That is, if I can run them off a PSU, I don't want to deal with dodgy AC adapter power bricks.  Do you know how these things are powered?

No info yet, but worst case would be

pcie to dc.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/6P-dc-PCI-Express-PCI-E-graphics-Video-Card-Power-Cable-to-3-port-DC-5-5-2-1mm-/311007023793?

Since they pull more then 35 watts a box I think  the above should work okay.

I used to run gridseed blades with these adapters  they were very good.

Best case would be a better connection then a dc plug.

I got a few emails from avalon last night.    I should get a review unit soon maybe late July,  as for availability for sales say a 40 or 60 pack   early  or mid  August.  No word on pricing.

So xiangfu (avalon dev) told me pricing is not yet decided. As they are ramping up production.

So  I will check back here with any info the next few weeks.

With btc getting near 300 usd. It is hard to say what pricing will be. As gear prices do tend to track BTC price.

Good news that they got back to you finally.  Keep us posted.  I can't wait to hear about the review unit.

I sent a pm to you.

FUN > ROI
You could try IRC, freenode, #avalon - though if you're not getting a response, it's entirely possible they'd rather announce this officially and globally (i.e. coordinated across their communication channels both here and the various Chinese forums) .. though a reply to that effect would be nice Smiley

I emailed again.  First email was sent on the 30th of June.

I am hoping for an answer even if it is no.  No response at all is pretty hard to deal with.

I had a few pm's about joint funding so I may be able to buy a large order.

Maybe I will get a response.

Besides price, it would be good to inquire about noise. Given it's size, and the quietness of the 4.1 miner, I would expect it to be a complete non-issue. Nevertheless it wouldn't hurt to ask.

So if you have an interest  in them let me know. I am USA based.

I would sell BTC only. I would ship USA only.  I realize it is all about the price.

Update:

I have been told a review unit around late July will be supplied to me. Sales may start mid August.

So far I have not heard back from Avalon about the mini.

But I may buy 10 of them. If so I would keep 3 or 4 and sell 6 to 7 of them.

I have no info on price

The site is down again. I hope this time it comes up with a sales price.
