A .dat file? Where did you get that from? Ledger? Well, if I were you, I'd install Bitcoin Core and I'd try to import it.
When you use Electrum as the interface for your Ledger hardware wallet, Electrum will ask you to create a new wallet. But this wallet alone is useless. It contains no private keys because all keys are kept on the hardware device.

OP is confused. He doesn't have a .dat file, just a regular wallet file created by Electrum. That file alone does nothing because it needs to be coupled with your Ledger device to open.

@marimanga
What happened with your seed? You needed those words when you configured your new wallet. You then had to enter them on your device as a security feature to check that you wrote them down correctly. To be able to enter them, you had to make a copy of them somewhere. Any chance to regain access to that copy?

You don't need to have your ledger device if you have seed phrase words written on paper and saved in safe place as a backup, and this is mandatory step in process of creating you wallet account for the first time.
Connecting ledger with electrum is NOT a stupid idea, but not saving your seed words is stupid...

Beware that scammers may try to contact you with PM in forum now and offer you some fake help!

I don't have seed.. i just have wallet file .dat

Is it even the same wallet backup that you have for your Ledger? Because as far as I know Ledger definitely doesn't provide software backups(obviously because it defeats the purpose of a hardware wallet).

Sorry. But if you didn't have your 12-24 word backup, your money is pretty much gone. Learn to read the instructions next time.

I don't have a Ledger, but I guess that if the user has the wallet.dat file, he can recover it using a software wallet. If he's still unable of importing it to a wallet like Bitcoin Core, he'll have to simply purchase the same device. If the firmware was open-source that may wasn't needed.

Any other extra methods may put his savings in danger. If I had lost access to 1.3 BTC and couldn't import it to Bitcoin Core somehow, I wouldn't think how I'd pull through less than a hundred bucks. I'd simply buy another one.

<...> I don't have seed.. <...>
Well it specifies it pretty clear here:
https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000380313-Manage-your-private-keys-own-your-crypto

And the Ledger package itself does clearly state to write down the recovery phrase, as it is your backup. Bearing in mind that a device can break, be misplaces, get lost or stolen, it’s paramount to do so.

Electrum alongside Ledger is a pretty good combination, giving the user more granular options than Ledger Live, whilst maintaining the private keys safely protected by the hardware device itself (thus it is required to be connected to operate on the crypto it protects).

Without the device or the backup phrase, there's no feasable way to recover your crypto. Ledger is in no way at fault here ...

<...> i just have wallet file .dat
What's that got to do with the Ledger+Electrum topology? These do not involve a wallet.dat file (which is Bitcoin Core prone).

@BlackHatCoiner. Just a question.

If the wallet.dat file has a private key in it, then it would be pointless to use the hardware wallet since it can be recovered using bitcoin core. As far as I know, this is only possible if the wallet.dat is created by the software wallet itself. Therefore, OP have lost his chance to get an access of his assets.

The whole point of using a hardware wallet is to have a device with a closed off environment that stores the keys that don't "leak" anywhere else.
If your wallet file on your PC (which doesn't have an extension if it was created by Electrum) contained any private keys then there would have been no point in having or using the hardware wallet in first place.

Excuse me from saying this, but didn't it warn you that you have to write it down? It wasn't an optional procedure, if you don't have the seed phrase you're reducing your chances to restore your wallet. I mean it kinda warned you for the consequences...

A .dat file? Where did you get that from? Ledger? Well, if I were you, I'd install Bitcoin Core and I'd try to import it.

Open up Bitcoin Core and click on Window —> Console. Back up your .dat file and type the following:
Code:
importwallet ""

If that worked and it imported it successfully, you can get the private key by entering the following:
Code:
dumpprivkey

You then import it on Electrum by clicking on “New/Restore” —> Name your wallet —> “Import Bitcoin addresses or private keys” —> Enter your private key(s) there —> Next and there you have it.

As far as I know, you have 2 options.

- Order a new hardware wallet (e.g, Ledger or Trezor) and then import your seed phrase to recover your assets.
- Use a compatible software wallet preferably Electrum and import your 24 word seed phrase for you to be able to transfer your BTC to another address. And make sure that you have verified the Electrum before using it.

But, just to be safe, I hope your missing ledger device has a strong pin code to reduce the risk of your coins from being stolen.

I lost my ledger device because i have connected with electrum (most stupid idea ever
LOL. I don't think having an Electrum as the interface for your Ledger Device is a bad idea; in fact, electrum provides most of the advanced features for managing your BTC that the ledger live app misses. Lightning network, pay to many, and coin control, among other features, are incredibly beneficial in several aspects.

Without the Ledger device, you can  not access your coins. Electrum is not the problem here for you.

I really hope you have the 24 words seed phrase saved somewhere. In this case, order a new ledger device and restore the wallet using the same seed phrase. Alternatively, using the same 24 seed phrases, you can restore the wallet using Electrum but you need to remember the moment you are trying the phrase, you are exposing the words and risking your security.

As long as you have the seed phase, you have nothing to be panicked.
