Topic: I create and sell 3D-printed WiFi devices that show Bitcoin prices and stats (Read 410 times)

It needs to be connected to a WiFi network in order to fetch prices and stats.  I actually don't think is even technically possible to use the USB serial port as network interface.
On the other hand you don't need a PC but you can also connect it to a wall charger.

Both v1 and v2 need to be powered through USB.
Can bitcoin data information be used from that same USB connection on computer, or it only works via WiFi connection?

The open-source code here is for v2  that uses TTGO T-Display.

I also released the code for v1 that uses the Heltec WiFi Kit 32, with OLED display.
https://github.com/giovantenne/CG1

Both v1 and v2 need to be powered through USB.

The v3 version has e-ink display and works for months with 3xAA batteries, but I didn't released the code yet becouse there is a backend involved

Source code and STL files released:
https://github.com/giovantenne/CG2
Are you still using TTGO T-Display or something else with this code?
I see website is showing e-ink ticker version 3 and it looks a bit different from older version that was posted in OP.

PS
This could be nice affordable alternative for bigger BTClock, and I already have TTGO T-Display that is collecting dust.

What for a hardware have you inside
The hardware is an Arduino-like chip. It is called ESP32

can I change the config to a special exchange like Kraken and switch from USD to euro?
Unfortunately only Binance is supported at this stage, but you can easily switch from USD to EURO  through a web interface where you can choose 3 between more than 600 supported pairs and loop through them with the push of a button:

Nice Smiley
I have one of this devices, and it can have multiple use cases, even as a DIY bitcoin wallet.
Is there a way I can download firmware myself, install them in my device and use it in a same way like you?

why there's a discontinued label for the previous version while it's still being sold on your website and Etsy?
Actually I have about 15 devices left... Hopefully It will be out of stock soon

Over the years there have been a few tickers from people that eventually stopped doing it, and then the support stopped, and then you had to figure out the back end yourself and how to make edits to the firmware. (afkdata, paper ledger, others) any chance of getting the source?
I have no problem releasing the code, but I would prefer to do some refactor before. As for my first message, I created these objects for myself so I didn't put too much effort on code readability.

What Wi-Fi protocols does it support. I'm a paranoid lunatic and all my Wi-Fi is WPA 2 or 3-Enterprise
WPA-2 is supported. WPA-3 is disabled in order to keep the firmware size small

Crypto Swap Exchange
Cool device, good luck with it.
A few questions:

1) Over the years there have been a few tickers from people that eventually stopped doing it, and then the support stopped, and then you had to figure out the back end yourself and how to make edits to the firmware. (afkdata, paper ledger, others) any chance of getting the source?

2) Same wit the STL files perhaps I want a blue one this week....

3) What Wi-Fi protocols does it support. I'm a paranoid lunatic and all my Wi-Fi is WPA 2 or 3-Enterprise

Each item is 3d-printed with a fully biodegradable vegetable-based plastic material.
The 3D-printed logos were a nice touch, but it'd be better if you also give your customers the option of purchasing the ticker alone [it helps with bringing the overall cost down and that could lead to more sales].

BTW, why there's a discontinued label for the previous version while it's still being sold on your website and Etsy?

Could this be a security issue
I perfectly understand your concern!
This is the same trust issue we all are facing daily with our IoT devices (printers, IP cam, smart devices, etc). Unfortunately we can only trust the manufacturers.
Connecting the device to your "guest" network (if available) can make you fell more comfortable.
In any case, keeping your network and your devices/computers updated and secure is the best thing you can do. This regardless of this ticker, especially if you are in the crypto-space. In this case an hardware wallet should be a "must have".
Additionally, if you are a tech guy and you want inspect the generated network traffic you can see that the device only connects to the Binance and Coingeko servers. No other network connections will ever be open.

Price is probably fair given this is very niche, but seems steep when compared to for example an usb-energy-consumption reader from amazon (with a similar display).
Yep, I know it is not cheap, but please consider that it is not an industrial/mass-produced device. Every device takes more than 3 hours of continuous printing.
Additionally shipping and taxes are already included on the price, so the final gain is quite low.

Maybe try offering a 10% discount for bitcointalk-users with a promo code?
This is a really nice idea, but instead of a promo code I just release a referral program that can allow anyone to use an LNURL to automatically receive a 10% of the total for every purchase done on the following 24 hours.
For example, if someone access the site with the following URL and purchase some devices (within 24 hours) the system will send the 10% of the total in BTCitcoin to the ref address indicated in the url:
https://www.cryptogadgets.net?ref=lnurl1dp68gurn8ghj7ampd3kx2ar0veekzar0wd5xjtnrdakj7tnhv4kxctttdehhwm30d3h82unvwqhkyctwdejkgar4wf6xcefkxuh2lnk3

This can automatically become a sort of cashback for anyone who knows this trick (currently only you at bitcointalk Wink )

Hello and thanks for replying to each of my points.
The referral idea is good and seems well implemented.

Regarding price, here are my thoughts:
You are currently in a strange territory; it's neither a cheap device that anyone would just buy for fun easily, unless they don't care about expenses at all, nor is it a really fancy high-value(looking) product. If you continue using the plastic look, personally I think it must be considerably cheaper. Or you try and really improve to something more fancy and you can even up the price to 99 USD and maybe beyond. That could work if the crypto logos are metal or have any other high value components. Just my 2 sats.  GL!

Can you tell us what device you are using for this ticker?
It looks to me like TTGO T-display or something similar that can be ordered very cheap from China.
Paying €75 for your CG2 device is not cheap at all, but I appreciate you are doing that with worldwide free shipping.

That's a pretty cool gadget you created there.
I am not familiar with the tec behind it, my first thought is: Could this be a security issue and how do you make sure to transparently show you are not reading out and sending out any sensitive information obtained in the wifi network it is connected to?

Here is the link to my website shop where you can also pay with crypto:
https://www.cryptogadgets.net/

I first created these objects for myself, playing with 3D modeling, 3D printing and software development.
After a few hours of coding and several 3D prototypes thrown in the trash, I was so satisfied with the results that I started to sell the device on Etsy

After a few hundred of sales I created an upgraded version with the following features:

WiFi powered. No PC needed
This ticker is a stand-alone device and it directly connects to an existing WiFi network. This means that you don’t need a PC to get it running.

3D printed in eco-friendly bioplastic
Each item is 3d-printed with a fully biodegradable vegetable-based plastic material. contrary to other thermoplastics which are petroleum-based, some of the raw materials used include corn starch, tapioca roots, or sugarcane.

Super easy setup
Connect the device to your WiFi network and program it through your phone/pc thanks to an easy to use web interface!

Support for more than 600 pairs
Choose your three favorites from more than 600 cryptocurrency trading pairs (Binance used as source).

True real-time price
Unless similar devices CryptoGadgets display updates real-time, several time per second!

Adjustable display brightness
Adjust your device's brightness so it will not bother you at night if you want to keep it on your bedside table.

Upgradable firmware
Keep your device updated with periodic bug-fixes and performance improvements.

USB-C powered
Just connect the device to your USB wall charger or to any USB port through a USB-C cable to get it running (cable not included)

Power efficient LCD display
Onboard 1.14-inch 240*135 power efficient dot matrix COLOR display.

I really hope you like it
