I wont agree to have a demerit system.
My reasons are listed below.

-- Demerit system might put a huge wall between members instead of having a good conversation with others.

-- Letting other members to give demerit to others is not a good idea. There might be people who might give demerit to other member that they dont like.

-- People tends to retaliates when somebody mocks them. So its possible for two members to give demerits with each other until they both loss all their merits.

-- Demerits will add to the difficulty to rank up.

For me this forum is created so that the members here will help each other to grow. Do you agree with me?

Ps. I hope my english is on point,so if you found something wrong you can correct me so that i can learn more.

Simple solution to this problem is to give that privilege only to staff. I also think that merit system is not needed but then I see a thread like this one and I have to rethink. You should express this opinion in already existing thread about demerits. Like these:

OP, it's no wonder you wouldn't support a demerit system.  Looking at your post history, I'd be the one to give probably every single one of them a demerit.  Your posts are all of uniform length, and none of them contain anything worth reading--and it's obvious when I look at them that the only reason you are posting in the English section is because you're getting paid to.  And let's be honest, that really is the only reason you're doing it.

In like every other post, you recommend doing bounty programs and write the same vapid responses like
If you will quit here at this moment, you'll surely miss a lot of opportunities to learn and grow your skills here.
that everyone in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Philippines writes.  Because that's all you've learned how to write in English.  Let me tell you, that shit gets old real quick around here.  These sorts of posts, and users like you, are the reason the merit system was put in place as an alternative to DT members red tagging offenders.  Please don't ever wonder why you haven't yet gotten any merits.  It'll be obvious to any bitcointalk member who's been here for any length of time.  Your posts are garbage.

This is what i've been pointing out with all these demerits posts. Who in this forum would like to have negativities on their account? Not only it'll help the difficulty to rank up, it'll be like trusts that would make others think bad of you, making you obsolete. Let's help each other grow, not pull each other down.

Thanks, Im happy that were in the same boat. Lets keep growing

You could never have a demerit system where the masses could use it. We see it all the time where some group of people take it upon themselves to destroy someone else for "reasons". The only way it could possibly work is if only a select group could hand out demerits. But given how there are some who feel that those currently using the trust system to perform that action are abusing it, I can't see that working either. Without there being crystal clear guidelines as to what sorts of posts warranted demerits and those handing it out were capable of taking their personal feelings/opinions etc out of the equation, it wouldn't work either. Thing is, everyone would get demerits. Everyone does posts from time to time that would be the sort that would be defined as warranting demerit.

It's well known that positive reinforcement is more effective than negative reinforcement. Theymos quoted that he thinks merits should work without the need for demerits and I think this will be the case.

Nobody likes to be punished but everybody likes to be rewarded.

I agree that negative reinforcement is not the best way to achieving better posts overall on this forum. Firstly there is nothing stopping a user making another account to get back to 0 (if negatives are included). Secondly I'd be concerned that there would be less incentive to report posts to moderators and instead simply demerit posts, which leaves bad posts visible and clogging pages. Third negative reinforcement is always tough to get right and putting that in the hands of potential users who may act in a retributive manner will just be begging for complaints and further issues down the line. If you look at the number of threads started concerning merit, a positive reinforcement method, being unfair imagine the stream of tears that would come from a demerit system. Positive reinforcement sparks new members to learn and at least develop good writing skills, however negative reinforcement will deter posting in a way that could very well have a serious chilling effect on the boards.

I think there's not even mentioned in the merit and rank system created by theymos about demerits to be implemented. Although it might be if necessary.

Here's a quote for you to understand:

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.
