The thing is, it's easy to forge such wallet.dat files, Bitcoin Core doesn't and probably can't prevent this, unless you apply full encryption of the wallet file, so that scammers can't convince potential victims, there's actually some coins controlled by the wallet.

If you know how to do it, you can create a ton of such faked wallets. The applied wallet password prevents the buyer to quickly check that the wallet is forged. Bitcoin Core will happily show some balance of injected public keys. The scammed buyer will first have to break the wallet password, if he ever manages that. If he does, he will discover that there are no matching private keys for the public keys in that wallet. Only then this forged wallet.dat file is burned.

Every morning some dude wakes up to think he might be able to buy a "real" wallet.dat, waiting to be scammed by this scheme. Should be known by now for a long time, but every morning...

I really don't understand 2 things:
1 - How people still fall for these scams in 2023, knowing how much greed there is in crypto and knowing how dangerous the internet is and how many scams of every type we see daily
2 - How people still think they are gonna get away with it here where there are tons of experienced users, with tons of knowledge and with tons of years of community, with devs and etc.

Realize that you and anyone else that tries, will get caught in the lies!

1- Greed
2- Ego / narcissism / 'I am smarter then everyone' attitude / whatever you want to call it.

There are 7 billion + people on the planet. You don't have to sucker a lot of them to make good money.

The problem is (not for those above) but the few and far between legit people who need help, we start out distrusting them and go from there.

Take out crypto and put in forged artwork, or selling the Brooklyn Bridge, and so on.

-Dave

Yes, I understand. Still I find it amazing how people think like that "I'm going to get away with it" in the only place where probably they won't get away with it!
Also I find it amazing how people that sell these wallets, actually get their hands on those files. Or maybe they just sell those files and those files only contain random data instead of real wallet data. Then, buyers try to open it with a Bitcoin wallet and they get all kins of errors and end up here asking for help!

<...>

You can manipulate a wallet.dat file (wallet file of Bitcoin Core) in such a way that you can load it in Bitcoin Core and it looks like the wallet file controls some arbitrary amount of Bitcoins where in fact there are no private keys to move those coins in such a fake wallet.dat file.
(I don't know exactly the details, but as far as I understand it, you can replace or implant public keys of existing UTXOs into such a fake wallet.dat so that it appears that those coins are "in the wallet.dat" (yes, we know coins are only in the blockchain; it's just an expression)).

Scammers sell such fake wallet.dat files to gullible buyers. Usually those wallet.dat files are sold as wallets where the owner lost the wallet encryption passphrase. An encrypted wallet.dat file has only sensible data like the private keys encrypted and can still be loaded in Bitcoin Core. The buyer can still rescan the wallet and Bitcoin Core will show some coin amount, but as there are no corresponding private keys for those coins in the file, the wallet is basically worthless or worse than that. The buyer is tricked to spend time, efford and energy to crack the encryption first before he realizes that he was scammed.

Please excuse my ignorance, I've read the whole thread but I don't understand what a fake wallet is and how it can be negociated next.

I once saw that someone could create a wallet and attract users : when people send gas, it's immediately transferred elsewhere. Here, the scam seems different. What is it really?

Thanks

But beyond all of that it comes back to the transactions that were actually being shown. The 1st 3 mined? Seriously, that is either an extra special kind of stupid or just an outright troll.
...
With the amount of fake wallets that people keep buying and then coming here to ask for help, I think more and more we should start asking more questions 1st and then think about helping them. Legit people loosing their passwords seem to be very very rare vs. scammers / trolls.

Whoever created this fake wallet.dat is looking for stupids. The transaction times (UTC+3h) and later cited addresses caught immediately my eye, too.

At least the Genesis block hasn't been implanted into this fake wallet as this particular block subsidy can't be spent while the additional "donations" of ~22.64...BTC can.

Anyway, putting the blocks #1...#3 into such a fake wallet is truely kind of an intellectual offense. Miner of blocks #1 and #2 is unknown, block #3 is attributed to the miner called "Patoshi" which likely was the owner of the Genesis block. Very very unlikely based on history that even if they were real those keys would be in one wallet.

You can't fix stupid. If you search with Google or search here in the forum or via https://ninjastic.space/ you will find a ton of post which warn to buy such fake wallet.dat files. This is a known fact for years. How can someone be so blinded by his own greed? Oh, wait, greed overpowers brain and logic.
My negative opinion and criticism of OP is not because he got tricked into buying a wallet file whose coins he will never ever get access to. He got tricked and cheated, simple as that. My issue with the person is that they obviously don't mind they are holding someone else's fake wallet data and are asking for help to steal its contents. NeophyteReq is a morally corrupt individual.

He's definitely guilty of that he cannot delete this thread so he just edits and erased everything not knowing it can be retrieved through Ninjastic, he knows he is wrong to buy a wallet file because of his ignorant so he turns to the forum for experts help and advice, even sharing what's inside.

He is not going to be the last to buy a fake wallet because there are a lot of greedy people that can be manipulated to buy this stuff, scammers are good experts in selling these fake wallet.dat

This is going to be a reference for people who will come here to get advice and help to access the wallet they bought.

I am going with troll at the moment, but since the OP has gone away and is obviously not coming back does it really matter.

--snip--

I wish the wallet.dat file structure wouldn't allow such fake wallet constructs which pretend to contain coins but don't have the proper keys in it. Anyway, with OP's mindset, he deserves to have been scammed. I agree with that, too.

I believe such opinion already stated elsewhere. But in the end, it never happen since unencrypted data of wallet.dat (address, tx history, etc.) is needed to get latest transaction history when user open or keep Bitcoin Core running. User probably don't want to enter their wallet.dat password if they just want to make sure their Bitcoin Core is fully synced.

You deserve it.

I couldn't agree more with you.

What I despair about, however, is that people like OP continue to make richer fake wallet.dat vendors and that means, indirectly, that we'll continue to waste our time here with these kinds of topics for years to come.

I dream of an advertising campaign that makes it clear in a banal way that this is a scam. How long will it be before people realize that they're being ripped off with these crappy wallets? Is the greed that strong on earth?

I am going to say what many probably think. You, NeophyteReq, are an idiot! By saying that it doesn't matter to you whose wallet it is, shows that you are ok with stealing money and bitcoins that don't belong to you. Which means that you are not just an idiot but a piece of shit on top of it. I hope you paid a lot of money for it and that you got scammed. You deserve it.

What does it matter whose wallet it is? After all, I have the dat file. all we have to do is crack the password? if this is possible i will give half of the coins inside the wallet.
Why stop at only 150 BTC when you can have thousands that are supposedly locked in lost wallets? In case you are bored and if you have extra money, you can fool yourself for the rest of your life that you are rich -> https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/wallets-btc-files-walletdat-64000-btc-balance-5421106
Since Op offered 50% of the coins if you help crack the password. If he continues to thousands of it, it will be big and someone here can be holding bitcoin more than Satoshi through this process.

AFAIK,

encryption has been added since version 2.3.0, and if you have been "found" those files and the transactions were from 2009, then this file will definitely not contain encryption with password.
If you bought it, it is most likely a fraud, as its contents have been manipulated to show the public key for these transactions, and even if you find the password, you will not find the private key for these addresses.

You said it was your wallet!
Those pictures you've posted show the reward from the first 3 blocks in Bitcoin history.
This means you must be Satoshi, and as I'm quite unsure about your knowledge, let me explain further, this means you must have created Bitcoin!

After all, I have the dat file. all we have to do is crack the password?

Yeah, that's all you have to do!
So, drop the act, how much have you paid for it or how much are you going to ask a noob to pay for this garbage?

When you come here and ask for help, at least be kind and honest. That's not your .dat file and I even bet you bought it, so, congrats, you got scammed. If you want to recover that wallet's password, you should have a look at this guide that's written by our forum member: Bitcoin2john: the reliable cracker that will break wallet.dat files.

Learn how Bitcoin works. It's obvious you didn't create this wallet by yourself, and it's also obvious the real owner of those addresses didn't give it to you. So at best, someone created a fake wallet. There is no password to crack, the wallet doesn't contain the private keys. Give it up.

It does matter. What if its a big corporate's wallet? They will track you down anyhow if you try to hack their wallet. You will have to use an exchange to convert it into fiat and you'll get caught then.

After all, I have the dat file. all we have to do is crack the password?
Its not that easy if its not your wallet. You have no hint as to which type of password may be used there like "a name" or "a number" or both. If it was your wallet, you'd have some hints as you know yourself better.

And on a side note wallets from that era cannot easily be opened in a modern client.
And probably a bunch of other things show that this is not your wallet.

Why is everyone here looking at each other as scammers?
People often post here about a "lost password" on a wallet they bought. That's why.

If it's real, all you need to do is make a few backups, and remember your password. Or brute-force it. Depending on the difficulty of your password that may or may not be possible.

but when I look at the blockchain site, it appears to be empty.
How did you get those wallets? If you bought them, you're wasting everyone's time. If they're really yours, you should start by rescanning them.

That screenshot shows a different wallet from your previous thread, seems like you have a lot of discovered old wallet.dat file, hmm...
Why is there are URL in the description? And archive shows that it's not an old website.

Anyways, the bottom part is cut off but your other thread shows that your Bitcoin Core is not fully synced.
Wait for Bitcoin Core to sync before declaring that you've found bitcoins or you'll just waste your time recovering the passphrase.
Also do not enable "prune block storage" setting so it wont have to resync everytime you load another wallet file.
