The trick with removing the heatsinks is to heat up and remove the smaller bottom one first, otherwise heating the top taller heatsink will loosen the solder and pull the chip right off with the heatsink. As far as removing the thermal epoxy you literally just take an x-acto knife and shave the epoxy off of/around the edge of the chip and clean it with a lil alcohol.

P.S. When heating up the heatsink for removal try and roll it back and forth slowly while heating it up, never pull straight up.

In terms of solvent, I've tried acetone and xylene, neither of which seem to touch it too much (assuming it's the same black stuff as the S7s). I strongly suspect it's some sort of epoxy.

Heat does soften it enough to remove the heatsink before the solder melts, if you're careful.

Definitely interested, but guess you don't want to bother with international postage.

I suspect you should be able to resurrect that board, since the failure is almost at the end of the chain - likely the 14v 'boost' has blown as well and it's not getting recognised at all?

Cheers,

Allan.

Perhaps some fun for Lightfoot? He's mentioned wanting to tinker with these...

yeah  I would want to send the burnt one to some one  with some skills  even it it is only  figure what solvent to use  to drop the heat sink.  As most likely there is a good solvent for the thermal glue.

okay I burned up an s-9
1 board works
1 board is really burnt
1 board only looks to be damaged by the pcie jacks.

gear was a year old it burnt due to too much dust  allowing it to over heat and short
it also burned up an evga 1600 p2 psu

photos of the dead boards below.

one is beyond repair the other I am waiting for bitmainwarranty to contact me on.  as usual they are slow.

So I would not mind giving this dead burnt s-9 board away.
the one that has scorched pcie jacks I will send into bitmain warranty sooner or later.

but the one with the heatsink melted burnt off is not going to be repairable.

see below..  I know we have tinkerers here on the site so  let me know and I will figure a way to give it away.
