Yes, use pool supporting Stratum protocol (currently my pool and btcguil): http://mining.bitcoin.cz/stratum-mining

You'll need up to 10kB/minute even whle mining on 1+ Thash/s mining rig.
Is that 10kb/min just for getting work, or does that include submitting shares as well?

Including submissions. Work itself is 1kB/minute or on new bitcoin block. These 10kB/minute is also upper estimation, it is expected to be a little less in most cases.

250MB per day would be enough for my 2GH/s rig. But do you mean that it costs £2 a day to run even if you stay within that 250MB limit?

Get a cantenna and find wireless signals around you.  You might get a free one but you can easily crack WEP using some simple linux tools.

I've moved to a place where all bills are inclusive, including electricity.

But I have no internet except for a 3.5G HDSPA dongle. Speed is pretty good but max bandwidth per day is 250meg and it still costs me £2 a day to run.

I can go to Starbucks or other free Wi-Fi zones to do big downloading if necessary (e.g. the blockchain) but otherwise I'm restricted.

(1) Can I mine?

(2) Is it worth it? What would you suggest for trying to get my return on investment a.s.a.p but still not spend too much?

thanks
If you're on free electricity I'd say pick up some cheap 5830s on ebay.

Also, a while back my broadband was down and I mined with a 1.7Gh/s rig connected via 2G with my phone with poor phone reception. Amazingly it worked, although my reject rate whilst mining was ~8%.

some used 5870s or 5850s are pretty cheap these days.

£2/day for an internet connection JUST for mining is too much. If you aren't using internet everyday it's not profitable to pay just because you want to mine with free electricity.
