Recently indexed the blockchain on a new server provision. It took 8 hours with 128GB of ram and 12 cores. In comparison, it took 4 days with 1gb of ram and 1 core. Its getting ridiculous.

Try storing some of the index in memory to alleviate stress on the CPU.

Not long back I left my laptop on & forgot to keep it charging. Core was up & running so obviously it didn't close down properly.

It had to 're-index' & seemed to take forever, about 4 days of basically being on for 24 hours a day.

Absolute nightmare, make sure you make regular back ups of your wallet. I do now & if that ever happens again it'll save me a hell of a lot of time.

Edit - I don't think the above issue I had happens any more on version 0.12.1 - don't quote me on it though.

Lol for real. I think OP should consider just using a light wallet given his circumstances and donating towards charities in Bitcoin as a way of supporting Bitcoin and showing/encouraging others to use Bitcoin for non-malicious purposes.

Is there limitations to your own bandwidth? Why would you download the blockchain on a public WiFi?
I admire your will to run a full node and I hope the trouble is worth it for you.

As far as I know, windows 10 might not even be the problem.

Perhaps consider creating a backup of your bitcoin data directory on a monthly basis. That way if you ever need (or want) to re-synchronize again, you'll only need to catch up the most recent month instead of 8 or more years.

It shouldn't take longer, IIRC. But while you're waiting, use a lighter wallet, as suggested above.

Tbh it's time to move from core to another wallet.

What version of bitcoin core are you using?
You can switch to a "light" wallet like electrum, easy to use and trusted, or multibit HD .
Both are valid solution and you don't need to spend a lot of time "waiting" a download Cheesy
