it's money digitally stored there.
Not necessarily. If you get a gift card with $25 on it, does it mean that the $25 dollars is somehow in that card? No the card just gives you the right to spend that money. Same with Bitcoin.

locate wallet.dat and export it other pc/laptop. From hereon, try to backup wallet.dat often. Make a periodical schedule and follow it to backup. cos., it's money digitally stored there.

What Gunther said. And make sure you're not doing it on the PC where you actually have some money in your wallet, as they'll be gone forever (unless you have a backup of that wallet, of course).

i think the wallet.dat is located in your program directory.. you could just save it from there.

also, don't use bitcoin QT as your main wallet.. it's not foolproof.

You can acces the files? Look for 'wallet.dat', that's your wallet. Install Bitcoin-QT on another PC and replace that wallet.dat with your own.

I just sent all of my coins to my laptop wallet and now the laptop is having major hardware issues. I can start the computer and access the files, but it will not run Bitcoin-QT or any other program for that matter. Of course I don't have the wallet backed up... Is there any way for me to back up the wallet without actually running bitcoin-QT or move the wallet to another computer while the laptop is in this state? I'm worried my coins have been lost.  Embarrassed

Thanks!
