I might go with XFCE being small as it is, or maybe some other small not very looksy Gnome distro. Like mandriva.
Mandriva is kinda down the drain right now, you might wanna go to Mageia fork (which is basically the whole Mandriva team under a different name).

There are available both Gnome or KDE LiveCDs 670 MB in size and also a minimal (dualarch) LXDE.
Those two LiveCD include some proprietary WIFI and video drivers making the installation a bit easier.

Compile my own? Little too technical fro me.
I may go with slax if I don't end up using a puppy/tiny linux type distro.

If you take any distro and compile it yourself, only the support needed for your hardware is included in the kernel, and you get a much smaller footprint, less than 1 gig often much smaller.
If you have a laptop, search for Linux on your brand of laptop. You might get lucky an someone else made a distro or a guide for rolling your own hardware specific version.
Compiling is not that much harder than following a an ordinary install guide.
If you ever used the tools for creating embedded windows distros, the method is quite simmilar.

As of right now I'm looking for gnu/L distros that I may install one on my laptops and desktop. I'm looking for somethingalong the lines in size of about 700MB and that uses KDE, although the foot is acceptable. I wanted to use Open Suse but it's 4gigs big for the latest build.
Any open/free software enthusiast mind giving me a hint on what you're using at the moment?
