Thank you you have finished my fruitless efforts.

So, If I understand this right. It is basically a lottery so I could technically solve the problem? But I only get like 1 entry where if I have a bad ass computer I might get to put 100 entries in the lottery?

Yes although due to the "lottery effect" most miners participate in mining pools where they split the reward when a block is found by any of the members.  To answer your second question.  Correct however the scale is likely a little off.  It would be more like you get 1 lottery ticket and a high-end rig get 40,000 lottery tickets and the biggest mining farms get 20 million lottery tickets. You don't.  CPU mining is dead, and your laptop doesn't have a compatible GPU.  Even if it did given the specs of most laptops you could expect to earn maybe a cent ($0.01) worth of Bitcoins a day by spending far more than that in electricity.

Mining either requires high end GPU (and preferably a lot of them in a special built "rig") or dedicated hardware (FPGA and ASICs).  The days of just gabbing any computer off the shelf are long gone.  Mining is far more competitive now.

I would like to post here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=42.0

But I am a newbie.

Ok so, I have a lenovo ideapad z570. I am running linux kernel 3.0.25 (pretty sure) with my pretty purple ubuntu oneric ocelot.
I am looking for a simple, hopefully gui but bash is fine too, bitcoin mining program. I guess I would like to just set it up to use my gpu and just get it working in running so I know how to do this. Then in the future I plan to make a small rig just for funlols.

I have been looking but every guide is so specific to laptop hardware and software that it would just take way to long to find everything I need. I figure there is someone out there that has the same laptop as me, or knows what I can do easily.

The best I've found so far is that pcoblm(sp?) is good. Other than that I do not know how to proceed, does this program have everything I need for my hardware? Is there a chart?
