Not had a problem lending on Polo except the rate changes constantly.
If you're using polo, and there is a built-in service in there that might make you some money. I haven't touched it much, but you have the ability to deposit your Bitcoin from your regular Bitcoin wallet into a loaning wallet. From that wallet other users borrow Bitcoins from you and then pay the back with interest. Thats an easy way of earning without losing.
I assume since it's based on the exchanged that they have escrow, and some level of protection in there. As You said you haven't touched it so you definitely need to read up on it but even if some of the people default on their loans, you still probably have a better overall percentage of Revenue return than with buying and selling coins.

You made the right decision in selecting poloniex as your exchange. There are many people complaining against it for different kind of issues but for me i really don't face any of those. About coins you should invest some of your funds in ltc not now just wait for the price to drop a bit more and buy xmr and eth for the long run maybe profit after 6 months.

I think better you go through with the altcoins announcement section because you need to keep track of everything where people are communicating more and supporting coin. You just invest on it.
Let me be clear. Nobody here can give you a 100% guarantee of good returns on any coin. Altcoin market is very uncertain and scams are quite common. Unless you yourself understand the market, refrain from trading in altcoin and stay in Bitcoin. Bitcoin has least risk and gives good ROI. You got a huge amount. Invest wisely. If you want to start with altcoins. Start with small amount like $100 and try to understand the market through charts.
It's a high risk high reward, if you're willing to take it. Overall if you've got money to spare, it's worth the try.
I would like to give you an advice and a suggestion. The advice is that you move your coins from poloniex to Bittrex or some other exchange. Poloniex has been facing a lot of issues in the past few days. So moving the coins from polo to bittrex would be first best thing to do. The suggestion is that you do a thorough research of the coin before you invest in it. Whichever coin you feel might rise up in future , invest your money in that coin. According to me XRP, DGB, LTC, ETH are some good coins worth to buy.

Unfortunately many people are are coming up with their own preferred altcoins, but I am also suggesting to go for long term bitcoin investments as it will come up with less risky and good returns for our patience. Bitcoin investments are known for good returns for those people who are not greedy. Investing bitcoins and selling off it on seeing 10% profits will erase the true potential of bitcoin investments.Split it between altcoins with future in your mind. $2K is not a big amount, so you can't afford a real BTC or ETH investment. At least not the one with a highest ROI. The alts could drown your our or could make your money x10.
Diversification is always good but for bitcoins anyone may go even 100% too. In last 30 months, bitcoin produced 10x returns and we can expect same consistency in coming months too whereas altcoins definitely lack in it.

Monero is been quite silence for these days and might we gonna earn few bucks of money if we just let our money stayed on that coin and I really think right now that its good thing to stake with the thrend and ride with BCH right now since many people are frequently buying and earning with it since the stand of this coin for now are getting more possible pumps then dumps. 
So far, ETH and XMR have the highest value among altcoins in cryptocurency, and it seems that a good chance always awaits this coin to produce a decent profit, both investment and trade, both coins always at the top of altcoin.

there is so much coin that you can try to invest in. use an app to make you easier to track the price. hope it helpfull
Its very big amount and you done some hard work to earned this all so better first of all read about this all and then invest this because once you done then its very hard to cover this all so because crypto world is very strange just one wrong move and you are going out with empty hands analysis and research is better then others suggests
To start with its a good idea to buy multiple coins and not to put all your eggs under one basket as per financial terms. You can buy BTC, ETH and ZCASH for now . This looks to have a good future potential and once you make some money with those profit you can invest in some of the coins which are in ICO stage.
Try to set your standard and have a proper check list on what would be the best platform,ico or anything that may suits for you since upon investing you may face some upsetting situation that can make you struggle in the long run so better you should do an self experimenting on which of the existing program are the best aswell as you will enjoy since if you enjoy the earning program you will not get their to upgrade/maximize some efforts to earn more with it.
buy some altcoins you want or mainly bitcoin, the end. however, do not attempt investing in bitcoin in case they have referral system as they are most likely a form of ponzi scheme. investing in bitcoin or something relevant is really dangerous, take care.
Split it between altcoins with future in your mind. $2K is not a big amount, so you can't afford a real BTC or ETH investment. At least not the one with a highest ROI. The alts could drown your our or could make your money x10. But don't listed other people, just read and re-read the Ann topics plus the whitepapers and make your own decisions which coin have a real future.
First I would exchange the money to Bitcoin. Then I would split investments up. The preposters have already given good tips, which I would pick up. Poloniex and Bittfinex, for example, are good to invest in familiar cryptos. Bittrex, Cryptopia, Livecoin and Yobit are interesting exchangers of new coins. Also lending can be lucrative for example on bittrex and poloniex. ICO could also bring good results, but you need to get familiar first to invest in ICO. There are many scammy projects but also successful ones with great teams, companies and developments behind them like medical care, solar parks or new technologies.
2000$ is not so much to do some serious profit. I recomend GunBot.

It would be better to familiarize yourself with the trading market of Crypto-currency before executing huge trades, frequently reading news about Crypto-currency could be a great tools to predict the next market trend on which altcoins is going to be the next hotcakes that traders are focusing their resources on.
However, altcoins will be alternate choose for bitcoin users to invest on it but bitcoin will be always great option on digital currency platform. As op expects he invest on polenix and start his trading career without no fear about anything including effect of August 1st.
When you are concerned about consistent returns in coming weeks then bitcoin must be the right choice as segwit was successfully activated and we can expect prices to double within this August. But bitcoin and hold it tight. I believe you do not need any other investments nor any active trades too.

Like someone have said, since you are a beginner, the first thing is to learn and not rush. Take your time to understand how the market works by reading threads and contributions from those that are masters in the game and with that you will be in charge of your decision rather than someone making them for you because the outcome whether good or bad will be borne by you and no one else.
I would suggest you to capitalize on Ether. Its price is about $200 and will very likely reach the mark of $1000 some day. It doesn’t mean that Bitcoin price won’t grow. It’s just that Ethereum is growing faster than Bitcoin now.

Bittrex will be much better choice! no one knows which altcoin will make you money. you can do some research on altcoins(use coinmarketcap) and choose the good ones or use (https://cryptoping.tech) follow their signals. I am new member and I just started with Poloniex Two weeks ago

I suggest you to deposit only $1000 in polo and another half in bittrex and invest in multiple coins after doing your own research.

I think Bittrex has more coins listed compared to Poloniex but in terms of volume Poloniex beats Bittrex buts its still up to you where to trade but before you dive into trading know the do's and don'ts first and try to observe for at least a few days and focus on a coin. Try to see how trend. If you know the thread of Gunthars Gunbot try to read teh first page as it tells you what to look for when trading using Poloniex. The amount is really good, 2000$ is a good amount for startup and to invest in something.
You will get many suggestions from us, new ideas, but I wanna ask you something? Are you aware of trading of coins? or Just you are interested in Buying some coin and hold it till it price goes up?
You can invest in many other things if you are interested I will list some of them. I have seen Bitconnect coin has made a really good progress and their lending section is doing a great progress and they are paying on daily basis you should check that out too. I am not forcing you to invest in it, I am just earning a good profit from it so that Is why I mentioned. I have invested 100$ and almost earned 20$ in 25 days or so.

2 never try to put all of your amount in one basket.
3 Try to invest in the coin that has big coinmarketcap, that gives you the more volatility and you will be able to see your portfolio increase as fast as possible.

Best would be to search and find the coin for yourself, understand the risks. Do note that most of the people will tell you to buy something because they are holding particular coin. You can although try to hold one of the popular coins and on the other hand you can go for the less popular coins which can bring more in return (but risk is higher here). Do note that it is hard to predict the market we all can just SPECULATE but this is not 100% for sure what will happen rather it is something that we wish/want and something that could happen. If we knew the coin with best returns be sure that its price would already be high for now.

I would go for ETH and Some for BTC. Prices are low now and with this upcoming scaling news prices might pump but it isn't guaranteed. If you are really eager to jump in on trading then better to learn the fundamentals so that you can able to spot out which coins you would really love to buy depending on your research and into your interest. Just a word of advice, try to trade other alts first so you'd get a grip on how it works, that is, if you're not planning of buying and holding alts for the long term.
Besides looking at the cap, take a look at the alt's activity in the alts section here. It's a good parameter to check too.

I would suggest looking at https://coinmarketcap.com/ to give you an idea of what coins are out there and then coming to this forum and do some research on the coins that take your interest, then choose a few not just one as it is always better to have many options and diversify.
I had to agree with habbear, there's no other coin that I can suggest to you.
ETH is on a hype now and it's possible that it can go up $1,000 and just like what's happening to bitcoin.

Wow, Poloniex offers a lot of different currencies to buy.
With a time horizon of a few weeks to months, I'd say Ethereum, given that it's down more from its high this year than Bitcoin or Litecoin. I suppose Litecoin would be my second play but you can't be guaranteed the next move will come in just a few months.
I don't follow the dust coins but you could pick up a quick 1000 coins for very cheap and hope you catch a pop. It's just tough to know which of those coins might appear legit (and thus generate more demand) at some point in future...and of course you have to be paying attention to sell during that pop. These alt coins don't go far, be careful!
