That's exactly what they did for me..

I had a 5770 fan die out on me... They were more than happy to send me out a replacement fan only...

I am currently using that replacement fan on a 5850 Tongue

Yeah.  I've RMA'd a couple XFX cards in the past.  Generally, they try to get you as close as they can, but when you're sending in a 5850 and all they have are 6870's, what else are they going to do but send back a 6870?  Also, the last time I had a card die, it was really just the fan.  So I called them up and explained that the card seems be fine, but the fan wouldn't spin fast enough to cool it, so it would crash.  I told them that if they could just send out a new fan, it would probably work out.

They understood and sent me just the fan, which I replaced and used to continue mining on that card.

The bad thing about their cards is that they're so difficult to overclock.

XFX emailed me yesterday and told me they would make it right.  Not sure what that means exactly, but they said they made a mistake and should have atleast sent me a 6850.  I currently have another 5830 in with them for repair/replacement so I guess when they're done with that one, they'll let me know what they're doing.

2010-2011, I rma'd a 4890, they sent me a gtx250, they responded with, they sent the wrong unit out, so I sent the gtx back, they sent me a brand new 5830. I was cool with it.

For the little hiccup, xfx delt with it in a cool manner. I personally think they test the waters to see if ppl know about hardware and to see if they'd get away with replacing a whatever card with a lower grade card.

They should give you something better, not slower. Like i RMA'd recently 74GB raptor, and got back 150GB raptor. That is good RMA practice.

Yup same... 890FXA-GD70 for 990FXA-GD80's..................... still waiting on a few.

I had to rma a 5830 to XFX and I received a 6850.
how could I look if it is still under warranty and is it able to RMA if the fan ist broken?
TIA

I just created a support ticket on their website, and asked based on the serial number of the card.  They just immediately responded with an RMA number and told me to send it in.

I would get them to set in stone what you'll be getting back.. .Say something like, will my new card be worth the expense of shipping this unit back to you?

Usually after the first RMA... I would get them to pay return shipping since it's a newly received RMA'd card... But that might be pushing it Tongue

no it was nonreference, the main problem is the one they sent me was about the size as a 5770, only it uses quite a bit more power so doesn't have adequate cooling, doesn't overclock, and is loud even at idle. now xfx did have a cheaper 5850 that had a small heatsink as well but mine wasn't that one

I had the same problem with xfx, RMA'd a 5850 and got back a 6870, which wasn't horrible but some benchmark tests it was slower some faster. But the new card has no fan control (just hardware 50% and 100%) no voltage control and the tinniest heat sink. So its loud and it runs at 86 degrees. XFX sucks

That's a pretty decent trade for everything other than mining, I'd say. Was the 5850 reference?

I would get on them about it. Talk to a supervisor..... Say it performs like shit on the games you play.

Not sure why they would downgrade your card like that...

I just tried calling them.  They don't open for 10 more minutes.  Is that my strongest argument, that it is a low tier card and it doesn't perform on games the same way my 5830 did?

Yup... I wouldn't accept a downgrade like that...

Probably because it's not much of a downgrade.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_6790/22.html
The difference between the 5830 and the 6790 is only a few percent, while the 6790 uses less power.

Still it's the principle of the thing. Even if it's a choice between a couple percent down for a 6790 or 10-12% up for a 6850, they should always give the superior option.

Yes. They aren't going to care that the 5830 mines 40% better.

I wouldn't be happy with that at all.......

And I'm not.  I'm going to call them.  The problem is I'm sure they'll make me pay shipping to send this one back to them even if they agree to swap it out.  I'm wondering if I would be better trying to sell this card on ebay, and then just buying another card.

I would msg them and say WTF?  Why did you send me a lower performance card?

you should have at least got a 6870...

Here's what XFX says is their RMA replacement policy:
Quote
Items deemed faulty will be replaced or repaired (subject to availability). If an item is replaced, the replacement will be the same exact model or a model deemed as equivalent (equal or better 3D performance) by XFX.

XFX reserves the right to provide a replacement based on the performance of the original purchased product and not features, current market value, or original purchase price. XFX also reserves the right to replace products with like models of a different type, for example AMD with NVIDIA, or NVIDIA with AMD.

Should I just sell the 6790 or mine with it?  I'm assuming I don't have any basis for complaining to XFX since technically this is supposed to be a better card for gaming.

I have another 5830 currently RMA'd with XFX and I expect they'll probably do the same for that other card.

(Please don't clog up the thread with sell all gpus and buy ASICS blah blah blah)

I'd call and complain. It's pretty common that RMA swaps give you lower hashing power just because of how well the 5xxx series mines, but in this case you're actually getting slightly less gaming performance as well. Asking for a 6870 is pushing it, but they should give you a 6850 as it's the next card up performance-wise from your 5830.
