You really make a good move here by motivating him because in a place where crypto is not adopted that much and if one is trying to break that tradition by moving a little forward to digitalization, neighbors and people in the town will definitely not support this. The only thing that bothers me with physical store who accepts Bitcoin is fee for every transaction. I have e-wallet if they have alternative method to pay something where the fee is significantly lower than Bitcoin and it's faster. Unlike Bitcoin which is probably longer and more expensive in terms of fee, although in one side I think let's see and treat as another way to pay stuff if I don't have money in my e-wallet.

Aside of that, more adoption of Bitcoin is great and being able to pay more stuff with Bitcoin is always welcome especially to bring more people into Bitcoin.

If two bitcoiners are coming together then this is least of their worries. We can always start to explore various options that pre exists. This includes paper wallet and they can be carried with us and handed over to the shop keeper or wherever the business is happening.

I mean since he is neighbour or live nearby they can always trust each other with the paper wallet. They could print some bitcoin money in the form of paper wallet; visit the store and hand over the equivalent amount of bitcoin. I’m sure there needs improvisation of the system but it’s nothing like we have no options at all and keep crying about it all the time about fees. That’s also temporary by the way.

If the store wants customers to make purchases and pay with bitcoin, then they must take care of the commission issue. Otherwise, competitors who are nearby and accept payment in fiat, without any commissions, will very quickly lure all buyers. That's the central question of the thread, and as skeptical as I am it makes me think it's BS, a made up story like the many you see around here to meet the weekly quota, as well as trying to fish for some merit.

Does anyone willing to pay bitcoin? even if the fee is even more than the amount of your purchases from that store? I mean I know a "Sari-sari" store, usually customers doesn't spend that much barely a dollar every single purchase, compared to how much you are gonna pay in the supermarket/grocery stores. I'd be surprise if someone actually did that, not even you have done that right? because the fees might even more than the amount of your purchase. Nevertheless, that's a good initiative on trying to accumulate bitcoin from the  customers who purchase goods rather than accumulating them using your fiat as there will be a fee when you buy bitcoin on your own.
It would also be better if you got a picture from that store showing the signage about accepting bitcoin payments and post it together in the OP.

This move of him is good, but it has a bad side as well.

The good thing is that, he's helping towards the adoption of Bitcoin in one way or another... and I guess that's only the good thing of it.

Now the bad side. Since we are talking about sari-sari store, prices of goods that are being sold in that kind of store is small, and if you will add the transaction fees the buyer has to add, overtime it might be a burden for him. Unless the buyer will buy in bulks, then the fees will not be felt at all. Another thing is that, I don't know if it's only me, but he might be more prone to 5$ wrench attacks because more people will know that he's involved into Bitcoin, and cryptocurrency.

TBH, there are more bad things than good things with this move, but it's his decision at the end of the day. I wonder how many customers of him will use Bitcoin to pay those goods. Maybe you can try yourself?

I have to believe that the plenty of people who sell groceries and paste the bitcoin accepted never gets customers to patronize them with bitcoin. It could be that they put those signs for formality purpose and for people to see them that they are upto date and enlightened.
When I see this type of post, I have to think about the wait time and who bears the transaction fees which is likely that they will be sending through exchanges and not wallets.

It is quite easy if they have installed the same application on their mobile phone.  For example, an internal transfer in Binance exchange doesn't charge anything.  So if it happens that the customer of the store have account in Binance and have some BTC fund, then they can make a fee less transaction.  Although the target customer of the store is @OP, I am sure some people around will get interested soon.


As I stated internal transfer of exchanges has no fee, and people who are trading have their funds on exchanges, and in Binance, P2P conversion if the seller wanted to sell his Bitcoin for Fiat also don't have to pay for trading fees.  So, the sales the store generates don't have to pay any fees if they wanted to accept and convert Bitcoin to fiat for restocking purposes.

Your neighbor accepting bitcoin as another mode of payment is actually good but the problem will be, will people in your locality be able to pay for the goods they are to buy from your neighbor with bitcoin despite the gas fees of $2 and above depending on the things they are paying for.

I mean, if it's on-chain transactions, it takes around 10 minutes to get 1 confirmation if one paid enough in fees, which is a while to wait in a shop. Also, canned goods and stuff don't cost a lot of money, so BTC transaction fee can be pretty big compared to the total amount. Or is it a centralized solution? If so, which one, and does it work well?

That 2$ on gas fee is enough to buy coconut and candies and still have some dollars left,  It makes no sense to pay someone in Bitcoin using transaction fee that's not suited for what they are buying.

Exactly. And I don't think at this time of the high fee transaction retail stores accept bitcoin for payment of goods. The story is... The write up might be there to say "We/I accept Bitcoin Here" but who will buy something in which the transaction fee is even higher than the normal amount money that you will use to buy the goods. Even the seller won't resell those accept coins because of low price of bitcoin at the moment and high transaction fee. One thing we have to know here is that money is for business and business money is for buying and selling of goods and not for stock. So how will the labour do to buy new goods? I have such stories but I have not been move to share mine.

For retail, this is not the best way to calculate. If I want to buy a bread for example, I have to pay half of its price. We need to wait some minutes and it's just for one bread brick.

Great. How I wish people could be as open-minded as that guy you talked about. Even though it's just a small store, it doesn't matter. Bitcoin is currency and it can be used as means of payment for anything.
This must also be a tough time with all the Bitcoin transaction speed and expensive fees. His customers won't be able to pay him directly as they might regret the $2-5 fees just so it could enter faster. I have a transaction earlier and it's still not confirmed for 12 hours, that's a dollar fee only because I just want to try how slow the transaction are now.

Great story, I will keep aside the part whether it is true or not but taking Bitcoin payments on a grocery store like your neighbor maybe not suitable. There are difficulty in small payments with bitcoin, his customers have to pay extra fees for the purchase and wait for the confirmation of transaction which I don't think no one is going to do. Probably, even if he'll accept Bitcoin, the sign will just be a design in his store since I doubt anyone will prefer to use Bitcoin payment. But it was still a nice initiative of him. Also, your neighbor is open to teach his children about Bitcoin so it's good.

That is really nice, but my question is, can your neighbor pick up the fees? I mean, it is really a small store, and transacting a small amount is really not a good idea unless the customer purchases a ton of goods, but again, it is a really good initiative, and now you can pay him in bitcoin, or in the morning you can talk to him about bitcoin. There's always someone interested with Bitcoin in every region regardless it's developed, undeveloped, small, big, restrict Bitcoin or completely accept Bitcoin.

Using Bitcoin in real life or knowing someone use Bitcoin in your country aren't dangerous, but the problem in your story is your neighbor know you're use Bitcoin, your neighbor know your house and it's dangerous for your security.

Finally, someone sees the way I see using Bitcoin as means of payment, it doesn't make sense to buy something you can eat using 1$ or more as transaction fee, how much is the thing you trying to pay for? It's not just worth it.

I prefer using Bitcoin as means of payment if what I am trying to pay for is costly, like I will gladly use 2$ as a transaction fee for 200$ worth of anything, that's why accepting Bitcoin as means of payment is not for every business.

This is surprising if your country didn't have any foot tracks of users using crypto. But if many already used crypto to your nearest neighborhood then its expected that adding bitcoin as payment method will gonna happen. But still this good news to be heard since for making this to happen it open other door to your nearest merchant to follow the same since they can create a little discussion about what they do. Let's say his neighbor did not have a single customer who would pay him using Bitcoin. I would still appreciate his initiative. I think from your statement that your neighbor didn't know how bitcoin transactions work. Your neighbor needs to learn about bitcoin transactions before accepting bitcoin as a form of payment in his store, however, as that would enable him to operate in his store.

It’s nice to see a local small store using Bitcoin as mode of payment. I will be happy to support store like this if I see in my area but so far no one here is doing this kind of movement for Bitcoin. What particular area you are. I’m assuming you are from Philippines too because sari sari store is our local term for mini store.

What I can point to, to make a discussion out of this topic is a few like, where do the neighbour children get access to Bitcoin from that the parent is advising them to pay with Bitcoin?
How does he intend to manage the fees on small goods and who pays for the blockchain fees while using it in the store to pay for the goods?

Nice story, but, assuming it's true, it doesn't seem to me the best time to accept Bitcoin payments in a physical store, being the fees to get a transaction confirmed in the next block around $2. If I'm going to buy $10 worth of items in the store why should I have to wait ten minutes on average and pay a 20% fee if paying with cash I don't pay fees and I don't have to wait.

Using LN would make more sense, but you would have to open a channel with each customer, so neither.

Good for your neighbor, you can ask them if they did their research before setting up their bitcoin payment option and if a single customer would be enough to keep such payment option up considering they would be paying fees to withdraw the bitcoin to your local currency.

I just want to share something here, because I have a neighbor here who has a small store called Sari-Sari store, whose goods are, can goods, coconut, wine, candies, soft drinks, soy sauce, and so on. I was just surprised when I was going to buy from his store, there was a poster that said "We accept Bitcoin" as payment, I smiled at this neighbor of mine.

I asked him what motivated him to do this, and although it's good that he did it, Then who will be the customer who will use Bitcoin to pay for his goods? His answer to me was me, I laughed even more and was happy with his answer. Because apart from me, even his children, when buying their goods, he will also teach them to pay with Bitcoin.
