As I read it, it is really good news. Forget about Bitcoin and currencies, and think of it from a consumers point of view. If we can monitor food sources and shipping processes for the stuff we buy, then that's great.If it can be used to check on fraudulent derivatives, then that's even better. Currencies stored in the IBM cloud, then that's cuckoo land.

Yep the big companies are interested in the Blockchain technology not the crypto itself. Only speculators and investors would have an interest in Bitcoin as it is now.
Without bitcoin there wont be a blockchain worth using. The whole reason we have such a strong blockchain is due to the miners keeping it going.
It's nothing new. I am quite sure that a lot mega sized companies will try to bring the Blockchain technology to the next level as they can benefit from it in the future. Bitcoin as currency is not part of their plans.

If they intend to do what they claim, how much data would be stored on this "distributed" ledger for each shipment?
It seems like in the first year alone with a decent amount of trucking using it, they would add about 32.85 Terabytes to this trucking blockchain.
How would they keep it distributed?
They can do this if they want, but something like that needs a massive data center.
Well it's a so-so news since it won't affect normal people and it would be beneficial only to the companies who will be using blockchain technology into making their dealings faster. Good thing though they always site BTCitcoin too but the sad part is all the major companies will always be after blockchain only, mainly due to the fact that they want to represent something as their sole brand and not others.
