By the way...

Yes, you can water-cool without a case, but I really can't recommend it. Cooling loops are messy and fragile, so you'd at least want to have some sort of frame keeping it out of your way and safe from being kicked/stood on.

There are a few fairly serious cooling methods out there like immersion cooling and liquid gas cooling, but they're not for the faint of heart. Honestly, air cooling is pretty OK if you don't have it boxed up in a case, and if you don't leave it beside a radiator or something. You could water-cool for better temps and possibly better over clocks if you have the budget anytime to do that. Anything beyond that is really overkill.

To your third question....I don't know. Each card seems different in how far you can push it. And you might settle on what appears to be a stable configuration which then melts itself without warning after a week solid performance. It's a balancing act.

PS: Edited my earlier post, sorry about that.

You're correct. The CPU has very little to do with mining (unless off you are CPU mining, for example Quark), and you can get away with minimal RAM. Some also exclude hard drives, preferring instead to boot Linux off a USB drive.

However, this particular company seems to be speccing multi-purpose machines, which are aimed at people who don't ONLY want to mine. Hence the more powerful processors and larger amounts of RAM. Personally, my own mining machine will be using a i5-2500K, simply because (a) I have it lying around and (b) It'll be a kickass games machine on non-mining days Smiley

However, to get the most bang for your buck, you would go cheap as chips with the MOBO/CPU/RAM (and maybe HDD), and spend all the cash you have available on the PSU and GPUs.

misunderstanding.
Im wondering why they use components in their PCs that are unnecessary/overkill for mining

because a better cpu ram etc wont help your gpu mining? right? or left?
