another thing i would certanly use is one of those change machines where you put your pot of pennies in the machine it counts it and gives you a token or something, you would insert a USB stick or a bitcoin card (credit card size with an address on) and you get the amount paid to you

I think its doable. Anyone who has extra BTC they want to sell they put in the "btc change pool" and when merchant qr codes it to send BTC as change to the customer its taken from the "btc change pool"  and everyone in that pool gets a little bit cash for their trouble or something along those lines. Thoughts?

... to expand on your thinking your saying if someone has $5 left over you rather the merchan scan a qr code and send $5 worth of bitcoin to your account ? ...

That's right, although if it were exactly $5 I probably wouldn't be nearly as motivated to ask for change in bitcoins as if it were $4.98.  It's having to contend with that fistful of loose change that really bugs me.

Unfortunately, based on the responses so far, I'm guessing that the capability does not yet exist in the bitcoin universe.

Yeah this would be fantastic. You could also pay with debit and get bitcoin back, just like you can with cash.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending

7-11's don't sell those calling cards near the cash register because they want to help people. They do it because there's a nice markup and they sell. But prior to them doing such, some salesperson approached the store and convinced the owner that if he were to offer these cards, he would enjoy x profit. Correct me if I'm wrong, but some products are placed in stores without having to go through corporate--these cards being one such animal.

That said, a reasonable 5% fee on the change given to a customer in the form of Bitcoin may pique a shop owner's interest. No risk! Now here's the good-rub. After a short period of time, the shop owner is going to want some of those coins back to boast his sales. At this point he'll be versed enough in Bitcoin to make that leap.

1. Give change with Bitcoin
2. Start accepting Bitcoin
3. You want a Slurpee with that?
4. Profit  Grin

Fake Edit: I thought this was the cat thread.

Real Edit: Here's the selling/marketing point. The shop owner will think that he's now a banker, charging a fee to give change. It's doesn't take him too long to realize that he can make even more by selling Bitcoin. At first, he may refrain from accepting Bitcoin for purchases, but he can always do that later once his customer base reaches a critical mass and starts demanding that he so such.

Finally someone who doesn't try to get the public to buy in speculation-size. I'm totally in favor of this idea! This gets people used to the benefits and risks naturally, without them having to go in too deep right away.

Just place a sign to a shop, "get your change in Bitcoins to your Android phone! Don't know about Bitcoins? Ask away!" and a QR code for the BitcoinSpinner market link. I'd probably buy something just for this if I'd run into such a shop. Smiley

I do like the idea. In fact, I have a domain ready spend4bitcoins to do just that just have to figure out time for it.

Edit: to expand on your thinking your saying if someone has $5 left over you rather the merchan scan a qr code and send $5 worth of bitcoin to your account ? I can provide bitcoins I just have to figure out the other part.

Rather than end up with a pocketful of coins after giving my local merchant a $20 bill for a sandwich, I'd prefer he scanned a QR code of a bitcoin address from my smartphone and have the equivalent amount of bitcoins sent to that address.

Not only would this have the benefit of eliminating the jar full of coins sitting on my dresser next to my bed, it would also provide an easy way for the general public to obtain their first bitcoins.  Further, this kind of service would not expose the merchant to any more risk, since he is already accepting cash for his goods. I would even be willing to pay a modest fee for the convenience.

Are there any bitcoin POS services, such as bitpay, out there that offer this capability?  If not, would this be difficult to add?
