Coinbitz, your idea is flawed by the fact that for it to work you must trust someone.

I like your idea, it would indeed be great if we could use all that power for such causes, but i fail to see how we could do that without centralization. That said i'm not all knowing.

Hello fellow crypto currency enthusiasts!
I have an idea for an alternative crypto currency and I want to know if it is feasible. I understand that bitcoins don't work exactly in the way that this idea is presented but one of you might know how to change that.
First look at this link..
There have been websites and programs that people use to donate computing power such as the ones listed on here: http://www.itworld.com/internet/76458/12-cool-ways-donate-your-pcs-spare-processing-power
Imagine a crypto currency having an added real world benefit of doing something like curing cancer. We can call those coins medcoins or something like that... Or we can create weather coins; they can be generated by the computational power of solving the blocks (maybe in conjunction to the data). The possibilities for research are endless. The information it finds can be used by anyone and the system can have its own address that people can donate into. The donated coins will then recycle into the system and give the coin a little more value (maybe by allowing additional coins to be minded per a block). This will allow better coins such as a cancer coin to make more money than a malicious coin such as a password hacker.
I don't have the know how to create any of these coins and I am not exactly sure if it is possible. Even the concept of how they are created and how processing power can be donated is a bit confusing to me. Regardless, I thought it was an interesting concept and deserves some attention. Right now bit coins are using processing powers to process the coins themselves (or something like that) but this process seems somewhat wasted on a task that shouldn't need that much computational power. It would make sense if the work used for mining had some real world benefit other than what it does now.. If crypto coins somehow benefit humanity that might also help relieve some of the bad press and save them from government banning.

Some possible coins:
Etcoin - searches for extraterrestrials
Worldcoin - works on many causes ranked by importance (idk how it would switch between causes)

Cheers!
