I use a Lian Li T60 bench/case with the optional fan bracket. It's all open air so helps with fan/cooling.
If was going to use a regular case, I'd water cool the cards.

you will need more than stock fans and cooling. speaking from experience, if you want to preserve your cards, you will need additional cooling or have a cooled location for your hardware.

use without case and place a small Fan then uhave no problem
Most of the cases I have seen have custom holes cut into them
to allow the placement of a lot more fans. I use a special tech
bench that allows for an open case with my 5970 and I have a
desk fan blowing directly on it to keep it cool. If the system does
overheat you will lose shares because of hardware errors which
you do not want at all!! Here is a pic of the bench I use to give

If you are going to mine with them, pushing them close to 100% usage, I would say the chances are pretty good.
