At what Mhash level would you say that a pool is no longer advisable for bitcoin mining? Or is a pool always a good idea no matter how big you get?

Depends on how long you are willing to wait between possible payouts.

Do you have interest in mining or are you just looking to buy in?

If you want to mine, do the following:

  • 1) Get a wallet. You can do this via Coinbase or the standard method.
  • 2) Find a pool to start out in. Most people start out at Slush's Pool.
  • 3) Set up a worker on your pool(s).
  • 4) Configure your miner (cgminer, bfgminer, GUIminer, etc.) to connect to your pool, using your worker credentials
  • 5) Wait a while. Wait a while, and wait some more. Try to upgrade your hardware, and then wait some more.

If you are wanting to mine, what kind of hardware setup do you have currently?
