I have recently honed out of the army and been looking at bitcoin/ alt coins and was wondering about starting doing it my self is it still profitable? I been googling stuff and I see some miner go for a nice buck... can I possibly build my own for a cheaper price and still see profit ?

You can build your own GPU rig for mining alt coins, but for Bitcoin mining you will need to get your hands on an ASIC, which is specialized hardware that is only sold by a handful of manufacturers. The latter you will most likely have to purchase from the manufacturers directly, as for example eBay prices are usually way too high to make for a profitable mining operation.
