Yeah, but they probably won't do that.  I found a lot of the discussion in Ivory Tower to be above my head in a technical sense so I've had it and Serious Discussion on ignore for a while now.  I don't think there's ever been a problem with higher-ranked members spamming either section, though I could be wrong.

Most discussions there are not Bitcoin related , and are off topic
There are some related to cryptocurrencies, but they are somewhat different from technical discussions boards.

I see no reason to ignore that board, as it has a low post volume and overall the discussions are good.

There is no spam, but there are some idiot discussions and topics which make no sense.but the overall quality is good

Given that the Ivory Tower is supposed to be a discussion board for serious senior members, I think it is sad that more eligible members don't contribute there. I did my bit to try to encourage its use, but I couldn't fight the sig famine there.

You are right JC, and looking at the posts you have indeed done an impressive job in trying to get more souls entering the Ivory Tower. I'm trying to do the same in the Dutch boards, with mixed results, so I know the feeling. Smiley

Truth is - and now I'm talking from a completely personal point of view - to me it feels a bit weird to discuss non-crypto-related subjects in a crypto-related forum. So in all honesty, to me it has absolutely nothing to do with the absence of sigs, and I really think allowing sigs wouldn't change this (a lot). In any case, not for my share of posting.

I'm happy I noticed the inconsistency and brought it to your attention. Maybe theymos will solve it somehow - either by changing the description of IT or by changing its rules.

If I may, I would also support bitmover's merit idea as requirement.

On the other hand, a spammer with a legendary account shouldn't be able to post there either.

I don't think Theymos wanted to have such a stringent requirement to post in IT or SD as an earned merits thing would be.  He obviously realizes that most garbage comes from lower-ranked members (not all of them, of course).  A merit requirement wouldn't be a horrible idea, but I think that would be too strict.

I'll have to un-ignore it and see what kind of discussion is happening these days.  I have posted in IT before, but I didn't find it any more interesting than other sections, and some of the discussions died off rather quickly.

Yeah, there is an inconsistency between the local rules and thread description. Member ranks can create new topics and reply in serious discussion but not in Ivory Tower. However, in Ivory Tower, member ranks can make a vote in polls, read, watch and get notified of posts.

Imo any rank requirement doesn't fit the criteria to post there.
There should be an earned merit requirement.

If the user manage to get 100 merits before 100 activity, he should be able to post there.

On the other hand, a spammer with a legendary account shouldn't be able to post there either.

I believe a 50 merit requirement would be enough

I think you have to be a Full Member in order to post in the Ivory Tower section, but I don't know for sure.
I confirm that to be able to post in Ivory Tower one has to be Full member.
By the way, I too noticed this long ago but really did not bother to talk about it LOL

Good that OP took the time to bring it in the attention. Hopefully the wrong one will be edited now.

It took me a few minutes to figure out where the inconsistency was, but yeah you're right.  It does look like it wasn't written correctly in that thread vs. the description of the section.

I think you have to be a Full Member in order to post in the Ivory Tower section, but I don't know for sure.  You could check some posts to see if there are any by Member ranks, or maybe someone can clarify what's actually the case.  Nice catch on this one.  I sure as hell never noticed it.

Hello,

I noticed an inconsistency regarding who can post in Ivory Tower, as it follows:

- the description of the thread says "Even more serious discussion. Members and above only. No advertising of any kind. No junk posts."

- in theymos' thread with the rules for Seriouss Discussion and Ivory Tower sections is stated the following: "You must be at least a Jr Member to post in Serious Discussion, and a Full Member to post in Ivory Tower." (https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/rules-for-serious-discussion-and-ivory-tower-2722359).

Did anyone else notice the discrepancy? Also, what is the rule actually for posting in Ivory Tower? Do you have to be a member or a full member?

Thank you.

Edit: I noticed that technically the Members can't post in Ivory Tower (there is no button for "new topic"). The question is actually if the Members should be able to post there, given the fact that in the section's description says somenthing and in the mentioned thread is stated something else.
