At the very least it seems it is more likely Phoenix-related.  Tends to be a lot more "stable" under poclbm though less maximum there.  I have monitored Afterburner (yea I leave it on 24/7) and it does not seem like there is any sort of GPU usage fluctuations and maintains steady at 99.

I am using an Intel platform (i7 920, ASUS Sabretooth X58).

Despite the issue, even with the stability with poclbm, I still gain greater shares and thus BTC per day with Phoenix, despite the issues.  With poclbm it tops out at about 391Mhash, whereas phoenix tops out at 406-408

It's not a personality trait, there's something actually causing it.  Maybe it's some process or service in the background using up part of the CPU so it can't keep the GPU fed fast enough, maybe something's using the same bus/bandwidth that the PCIE bus uses, who knows.  Do you leave afterburner running 24/7 with the graph up?

I'm actually trying to figure out a somewhat related problem - sometimes my gpu's are a straight line 99% usage (top speed), and sometimes they degrade into sine waves from 90% - 99% (lowering usage / hashrate)  For me it only seems to happen when both are hashing at the same time, I'm thinking maybe it's because it's on an older SLI board with an old slow AMD processor (both processes peg out the single core cpu, so they're fighting each other)

Are you monitoring the clock speeds of your cards?

I had a weird thing happen with my 5850 a while ago when I was trying to apply settings in MSI Afterburner. When I would enter in a gpu clock amount, like 850, and press apply, it'd go up to that speed for a few seconds, then back down to the factory 725 speed.

Yea, I've been monitoring that and it's all good.  I disabled power play plus emptied the "profiles", so there is no auto-switching going on.  At any rate, I think it's just a personality trait; takes a couple of hours for my GPU to get up to speed, for whatever reason.

Well by reboot is one of the ways I can reproduce it.  Sometimes it can occur at random and/or when I shut down the miner and restart but not always.  I went to sleep late last night, for example, and it was jumping around between 386-391.  Now I wake up and it's pushing out 404.9 Mhash pretty consistently.  I thought maybe it's just a display bug that occurs with GUIMiner or something but my pools reflect the change do.  When it's pushing 404, my estimated is infact higher and I've seen some wide variance in my shares as a result.

So is the rate only changing when you reboot or does it happen randomly?

I am trying to figure out what I am missing here because I cannot seem to gain overall control of my hash rate at any given moment.

The basic rundown is this: Let's say I've got a 5850 and it's overclocked to 960/mem 300.  I've had it reach and stay steady around 407 Mhash/sec.  Nice and dandy.  A few hours later or a reboot later and this will change (slips to 380-390Mhash/sec) and I didn't change anything, at all.  Cards not throttling, temps all in-line as per the norm.  I run with performance settings (i.e. no aero, etc) so it can't be that.  I thought maybe it could be the browser being open but it can't be since I'm not watching videos, have hardware acceleration turned off and I've seen it run plenty of times while browsing at around the top speed mentioned.  I'll leave the computer for a couple of hours and it'll be back at top speed again.  I'll use the computer again, just fine without much effect to hashrate (aside from temporary blips if I change to a graphic heavy website).

I'm running phoenix and I'm not sure.  I'm beginning to think the GPU has a mind of it's own... that it likes to warm up before heading into full sprint (despite what GPU utilization says (99%)).

Using phoenix miner / phatk.

Any ideas?
