what exchange would you use to buy bitcoins with a banking account?

I have used coinbase in the past for bitcoins but think the fees are ridiculously high over 1% per transaction is way too much! so am now considering alternatives

you are quite lucky to be in european country i guess. You can buy bitcoin with local currency or from directly your bank only paying 1% fee.
I don't think 1% is quite big fee to be able to buy bitcoin directly through bank cash.

Well it's a exchange service that never comes up in these type of threads but I just thought about it and I think you can do that with Xapo. Maybe someone can correct me if that's correct alternative? I know you can trade but you can definitely buy BTC there, not sure about the fees though.

You could have a look at http://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/ from which you can see the different charged trading fees. If you trading large sum of money, you can use huobi  which has zero fee. Although you pay for the wire transfer fees, if you trade a lot, and will be covered.

Please note that Coinbase and Circle are not exchanges. They are more like traders or maybe brokers. You buy and sell bitcoins directly with them.

As for exchanges, there are at least two in the U.S.:

Coinbase Bitcoin Exchange (run by Coinbase): https://exchange.coinbase.com/
Gemini: https://exchange.gemini.com

Both of these charge something like 0.2%, which is about as low as you can find. The downside is that you are trading on an exchange and is a little more complicated.

Sorry if I mixed up the terminology im not looking for trading of btc but rather just buying some bitcoin with cash from my bank account.

I haven't traded a lot but some of the other exchanges you can checkout are bitstamp, kraken, bitfinex, and circle.
