I have finally realized that even though a small portable screen would be fun...it is an overcomplicated solution to my simple problem.

In the end I decided on a $6 15' vga extension cable.  Roll Eyes
It will do the job and prevent moving monitors across the abode.

Thanks to everyone for playing.

If you want to connect multiple PCs to a single monitor try something like this...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LinXcel-Four-Monitor-VGA-Switch-VS-141A-with-AC-Adapter-US-Seller-FREE-SHIP-/161188689311?pt=US_KVM_Switches_KVM_Cables&hash=item258798359f

$25 = 4 VGA inputs to 1 VGA output (you can find bigger ones if you need more)

I still want to play!  This has a HDMI input port:  http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Bionic-Lapdock-Retail-Packaging/dp/B005OOIS1U

As well as a keyboard and trackpad that you can use over micro usb.  And a battery.

Yeah it's a bunch of stuff but you can make a small enclosure and then mount the screen creatively.  Would be kind of cool.

15" LCDs go for about $25 or less at thrift stores around here.

You sure you want to carry that crap around?  Grin

I was going to wear it with a keyboard and mouse, like a one man band.   Wink

(or make an enclosure)

This could be a good one.  It has USB input/output.

Thanks but when I say 'display' I mean 'small cheap portable vga monitor'.

Has anyone seen an inexpensive and portable (meaning: small) display that one could use to check on rigs that are not responding and are typically headless?

Other solutions that address the same scenario are welcome.
(scenario being: cannot remotely access machine & reboots don't bring it up, ie something is hanging)

Only stuff I've seen is full-monitor-price, which sort of defeats the purpose.
