If you "create" excess energy then in many places in the US you are able to sell the energy back to the "grid" aka the electric company at retail rates.
It's not a good investment because you immediately lose a huge portion of your principal. It's YEARS before your get to $0.
it depends on how much energy costs are in your locality.. and how much in rebates you get. i know southern california currently has a huge energy deficit, so it's starting to get more and more affordable.
FYI, solar panels are a pretty good investment.. it just takes a lot of upfront cash, but you'll make your money back.. and then your utilities company will pay you for your extra energy.
