it will work fine the only reason theres powered raisers out there is for cards that dont have a psu connection (motherboard powered) anything with a cable that goes to the PSU should work perfectly fine

There's an alternate situation where powered risers are needed, and that comes about when you power the entire rig off a 12VDC supply, using a small step-down converter that just powers the motherboard + CPU.  In that scenario, it's better to supply all 12VDC power straight off the supply rather than feed all the extra juice through the step-down converter and motherboard.  In some tests, our 5850's and 6950's do draw very near 60W on the 12VDC lines from the PCIe slot in addition to what's coming in on the separate PCIe power connectors on the GPU's.

Do you have any suggestions for good risers? Most I see are sketchy and have bad reviews.

Good to know. I am currently running 4 cards with 2 of them using risers. I was worried about toasting my board.

Ok. I was under the impression that you could be in danger of burning out your mobo when drawing too much power trough it.
But i was hoping it would work when i got four x16 slots.

Hello boys and girls.

I`m currently using 4 x XFX 7950s. And wondering about getting a 5th gpu. So my question is then.
Will i be able to provide enough power to the cards without a powered risercable?

My mobo is a ASUS Sabertooth with 4 PCI-e x16, and 1 PCI-e x1. The 5th card will then fit in the x1 slot.

I have a 1200w psu, and that would work fine, but it`s the power provided by the mobo i`m worried about.
The XFX7950 also have one 8pin and one 6pin powerconnector, many other cards have just two 6pins.

I do have a buttload of non-powered raisers, so does anybody have some expertise og experience around this?
