The ability to warch you tube is really a secondary benefit. I can watch it in a tor window in Brave, but sometimes youtube chucks me off for using a suspect ip. The main use would be to control and monitor a wild life camera. I'm trying to set one up to catch a guy who is stealing aged oak from a conservation area, and trying to kill the trees by slowly severing the roots. The one I have bought has WiFi,and this can be turned on or off from a switch on your wrist. It also gives full access to the images and videos, as well as the setup menu. It's Androis only, so that is why I think I will have to use my smartphone.

I'm not doing very well with this project, and I might give up and go back to running Ubuntu.
I'm having a go with MX Linux, and this may be the last variant that I will try. It's making me gritty, and I keep posting about Covid while downloading and installing these options.. Smiley

I'll use my smartphone for the android app.

Perhaps I will say nonsense, but if you are interested in watching YouTube, and just for the sake of this you want to change the OS, won't an elementary change of the user agent in the browser help? For any browser today there are extensions where you can change the user agent and emulate any OS.
I understand the mistrust of many kinds of extensions, but an exception can always be made. Use, for example, a separate browser for different needs. Or a separate profile.

Just like an idea.

It's starting to look as if this netbook will have to be a dedicated machine for my woodland trust project. It needs to be Android so that I can control the cameras, and it needs to have a large enough screen to display the images. As has been pointed out, it is probably to run any sort of dual boot or VM software, and there is really no need for that. If nobody can suggest a better option, then I think I will try the Phoenix OS first, and if that doesn't work, then I can switch to the AndroidX-86.

When it is stable, I could use the hardware wallet to help with funding the wallet. I may have to initiate a criminal prosecution - hence the cameras, and I will need a fairly secure and portable system for evidence gathering. I'm still waiting for the Amazon delivery, so it is all a bit speculative at the moment. Maybe I will run a blog if anyone is interested.

{update}

This is becoming a bit of a struggle. I'm now trying Prime OS

I would suggest trying it on a VM first, but if you only have 2GB RAM on it, that might be stretching it a bit too thin.

I'll wipe the hard disk, and install the OS for a direct boot.

Actually I've just been looking at Phoenix OS, and I might use that. It appears to be Google free. I haven't done the research yet though. If I back up anything that I want on the current netbook, then I can just experiment with wiping the drive and trying a couple of Android based OSs

Wait, do you plan to install the android on bare metal machine, or use an android emulator?

Thanks for the reply.

I considered getting a tablet before I bought the netbook, but I don't feel comfortable with the concept. They were more expensive than the netbook, and seemed to offer less.  I bought the Netbook as a second system, and promptly replaced Windows with Ubuntu, and it is working well. I get 9 hours use from a full battery, and I use it for posting, reading emails, a bit of picture manipulation, and stuff like that. I ran a full node using an external SSD, but I had to pause that due to the stupid Covid restrictions.

The Netbook is an HP Stream X360 with a Celeron N3060 processor running at 1.60 GHz ( the slowest variant ). It has 2Gb of memory and a 28Gb SSD. The case is an unpopular light blue, so the whole setup was a couple of hundred pounds less than the normal price.

I don't want to buy another system at the moment, as my next planned move is a Raspberry Pi based system for the van, and this will use solar power. I'm held up on this as I can't find roof bars with long enough legs for the solar panels.

Before doing this, have you considered getting some off-brand chineese tablet for like $20 and trying it out?
Laptops and phones/tablets have different CPU architecture, so you might run into alot of problems (at least i did few years back when i tried it, might have changed since then).

Also, if you're adamant about using a laptop, try on a virtual machine first. Could save you some headaches

I want to install Android X-86 on a Celeron based HP Netbook. There are a number of reason for this.

- Some restaurants block YouTube on computers but allow viewing on mobiles. I gather that Android X-86 will emulate a mobile, and I hope it will allow me to view videos.

- I've just ordered a wild life trail camera. This is to help a friend who has problems with people stealing from within her woodland. A normal surveillance camera is not really suitable, so I'm going to try using a wildlife camera. - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B087RFJFRL/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza
Setup is performed via a smartphone using their app, and it allows for the downloading of images via bluetooth and wifi. It will be much easier to do this using a netbook rather than a smartphone.

I'd be interested in comments and advice from anyone who has installed Android on a desktop or notebook computer.
