Found this article: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/zareasons-valta-x79, and it mentioned cryptocurrency.

TIL:

"Business has been a tad slow, most of the HUGE orders we were getting via BitcoinRigs have stagnated."

(that was in late 2011).

This is milking the last bit out of bitcoin-driven sales before nobody mines using GPUs anymore.

It's performing calculations in the same way a benchmarking utility would, except the energy is used purposefully instead of wasted. Tom's Hardware started including mining hashpower in their benchmarking a few months ago, IIRC.

Found this article: http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/zareasons-valta-x79, and it mentioned cryptocurrency.  (It got me to look into Bitcoin in the first  place.)

At the top of the last page, it says "We've Secretly Replaced Our Benchmarking Tools with Cryptocurrency!"

Found that very interesting... and it means the author is sort of getting paid for testing out the system.

Would that make you trust his conclusions any less?
