Maidsafe can replace the internet protocol in the future. Its the most ambitious project in crypto. Lets hope it goes cheaper and i can invest because the price is clearly bubbled now.

just had a look at their project it sounds very promising.

do you know how a decentralized internet would work practicaly?  i would download their software, open it and then? will the browser be integrated in the software?

will i need to have my normal internet connection on to be able to browse maidsafe network?

i was wondering  why there is only one internet protocol vs 500+bitcoin protocol? is it open source? if not who has the code? surveillance on the internet is massive now so why hasn't someone created a different internet protocol? is tor an internet protocol ? what do you think about kim dotcom's meganet?will this project use the internet source code and be modified?

You are mistaken.

There is only 1 Bitcoin protocol just like there is only 1 tcp/ip protocol.

There are many altcoin protocols just like there are many network protocols.

what are those network protocols?

Well if you want to get old school, TCP/IP, Appletalk, NWLink IPX/SPX were all competitors before TCP/IP eventually won out and became "THE Internet Protocol".  I'm sure there were others, but after the 90's it was these 3, and now there's pretty much just 1 standard, well 2 if you count TCP/IP version 6.

ok is freenet a protocol too? do you know if internet protocol has similarities with bitcoin protocol? someone above said internet protocol  is not just a code correct?

Believe freenet is more of an anonymous proxy service.  Bitcoin and TCP/IP share alot of similarites since they're both protocol implementations that have many different layers to it.  TCP/IP has 7 layers in the OSI model and 4 in the TCP/IP model, and Bitcoin has it's own protocol stack:

Bitcoin is open source and anyone with the technical know how can write to it, and build on top of it, applications that anyone can freely use.

It is simply a question of network effect.

The TCP/IP protocol used to compete with X.25, Minitel and many others. Moreover, the first 3G phone companies tried to beat the Internet by creating their own walled gardens, where they charged for services such as weather, news, sports and videos. In the end, the network effect of the Internet prevailed.

You could use mesh networks to pass around Bitcoin transactions and blocks, however, they'd have to eventually get back onto the "internet" backbone to end up being included in the blockchain.

The biggest problem with trying to create another "global" network is the hardware needed to connect between countries (which is mostly currently using IP).

what are those network protocols?

Three seconds of effort with the Google search engine turned up these links:

http://www.draware.dk/fileadmin/WildPackets/Basic/WP_encapsulation_chart.pdf

http://www.ipcomm.de/protocols_en.html

http://www.zframez.com/protocolsuite.html

A communications protocol is simply a set of rules that all users of the protocol agree to abide by.

Bitcoin is one protocol for a decentralized crypto-currency (it uses a blockchain as a method of reaching distributed consensus).  There are many other crypto-currency protocols (many of which use blockchains of their own).

TCP/IP is one protocol for communications between computers over an ethernet connection.  There are many other communications protocols.

what i was wondering is if there are different internet protocol that could be used today? and if not why? can they coexist with the current TCP/IP?

kim dotcom has a project to create a non IP based protocol , are you guys looking forward to this ?

And don't forget about UDP (used for many streaming applications).

But Bitcoin is an application level protocol (you should compare it to something more like bittorrent than TCP/IP which is what it runs on top off).

There's 500+ Bitcoin protocols?!?!  That's news to me...

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_documentation

All I see is one Bitcoin protocol and one Blockchain implementation.  Of course things could get tricky, with the supposed new fork implementation, but that's a whole other discussion.

Like DannyHamilton said, I'm pretty sure, you're referring to the Alt coins and Alt chains out there, which yes, can number in the hundreds.

Here's a good link on the breakdown on the one and only Bitcoin Protocol:

http://www.michaelnielsen.org/ddi/how-the-bitcoin-protocol-actually-works/

I think i'm confused isn't the blockchain a protocol? yes i was referring to the altcoins, i.m rather new to all this so i probably mixed up different terms.

bitcoin is just code.
much like VBscript
much like flash
much like html
much like JScript
much like java

the way bitcoin talks to other users is not a unique or newprotocol, its still done over IP addresses, just like tor and everything else on the internet.

if you want a totally new internet protocol you need to change how ISP's communicate between each other.

after all, it does not matter what the data, code, encryption is. if the stuff still goes down the telephone cable to an ISP then its still going to be IP based.
