Maidsafe can replace the internet protocol in the future. Its the most ambitious project in crypto. Lets hope it goes cheaper and i can invest because the price is clearly bubbled now.
just had a look at their project it sounds very promising.
do you know how a decentralized internet would work practicaly? i would download their software, open it and then? will the browser be integrated in the software?
will i need to have my normal internet connection on to be able to browse maidsafe network?

i was wondering why there is only one internet protocol vs 500+bitcoin protocol? is it open source? if not who has the code? surveillance on the internet is massive now so why hasn't someone created a different internet protocol? is tor an internet protocol ? what do you think about kim dotcom's meganet?will this project use the internet source code and be modified?

There is only 1 Bitcoin protocol just like there is only 1 tcp/ip protocol.
There are many altcoin protocols just like there are many network protocols.

Well if you want to get old school, TCP/IP, Appletalk, NWLink IPX/SPX were all competitors before TCP/IP eventually won out and became "THE Internet Protocol". I'm sure there were others, but after the 90's it was these 3, and now there's pretty much just 1 standard, well 2 if you count TCP/IP version 6.

Believe freenet is more of an anonymous proxy service. Bitcoin and TCP/IP share alot of similarites since they're both protocol implementations that have many different layers to it. TCP/IP has 7 layers in the OSI model and 4 in the TCP/IP model, and Bitcoin has it's own protocol stack:

You could use mesh networks to pass around Bitcoin transactions and blocks, however, they'd have to eventually get back onto the "internet" backbone to end up being included in the blockchain.
The biggest problem with trying to create another "global" network is the hardware needed to connect between countries (which is mostly currently using IP).

the way bitcoin talks to other users is not a unique or newprotocol, its still done over IP addresses, just like tor and everything else on the internet.
if you want a totally new internet protocol you need to change how ISP's communicate between each other.
after all, it does not matter what the data, code, encryption is. if the stuff still goes down the telephone cable to an ISP then its still going to be IP based.
