Agreed, mining is not profitable anymore. Currently the best way to earn BTC through mining is by mining other coins and exchanging them for BTC. You should get even more on average with PPLNS due to lower fee.
You get less and less from mining because of the increasing difficulty.
When btcguild had PPS(?) the balance just grew all day, but when they deleted that protocol(?) it takes forever to get anything, wich is boring.

You can try mazacoin or myriadcoin. As you say, they are not worth a lot but you get more of them.
