investment in crypto is new because I only learned about crypto a year ago.
Everyone has to start somewhere and one year of learning is not bad. It would be even better if you checked the last 3-4year or more price charts as well because then only the trend will become clear to you. Every pump and dump cycle goes on like the same way with different amplitudes. Just when to enter is what you need to decide.

Crypto volatility gives us a fairly fast profit and loss and this is a high risk. seeing trends, charity and speculation are always there in crypto activities and now I'm dissolving in them to get a little profit which is my goal
Only if you manage to get in at proper price positions and sell at a profitable one. Market is moving up today and this is the time to hold and sell in parts.

I think you should add one more thing is the discipline of an investor. Because the strategy and plan of the trader is more important than anything. If the investor does not have a strategy, he will not get anything.
That is exactly correct. Strategy and plan is pf the prime importance and once you have a good strategy and plan, you would not find it hard to escape loss. But if you do not have one, be sure that the market slaps when you are not active.

I am agree that news is affecting on investor sentiment. News can make investor panic and selling their coin and it will make price falling but also can make investor buying coin if the news is good for investor.
You people seem to have a bad idea about who is a proper investor and who is not. The real investors will make profits are the ones who have done research on a topic before investing in it. So a person who has done that for crypto would not be swayed by news.

News will be there, paid and manipulative to make people think wrongly. However people gain a resistance and stop following them because they understand the hidden motives.

Those who actually make millions never even check the news done by big media corporate. They have their beliefs and they run according to those.

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on my Master Thesis and as you can guess, the subject of it is ‘Investor Sentiment on the Cryptocurrency market’.

I came on this forum to get answers from the people who have already invested in cryptocurrencies or are actually experimented on this subject. My question to all of you is the following: From your point of view, what could be the factors responsible of sentiment on the cryptocurrency market ?

Just to clarify the terms used in my question, Baker and Wurgler (2006) gives two definition of investor sentiment:
1) The propensity to take risks and to speculate.
2) The overall sense of optimism or pessimism about stocks

Also if you have any papers that could contribute to my Literature Review, I am willing to take your suggestions.

Best,

ycollin

So a lot of people have came to this industry or i should say market with their hopes off getting rich and making money fast and easy considering how much their market has been growing fast through last tow years, and because of that there is a high percentage of investors today who are not driven by their knowledge of the market rather by their sentiment and their instinct of seeing the price going up and down, and because of that the minority is always affected by what the majority does so the market has been going down significantly, so in conclusion people who are driven by their sentiment always quit early and people who are driven by their knowledge stick to the end.

The mood of ordinary investors is always crazy. The long-term downturn in the cryptocurrency market has made many investors feel negative. They are almost in a state of depression. Now investors are very sad. People in other industries will make fun of cryptocurrency investors.

Over here you need a strategy after strategy and this often makes it difficult for the people to handle the crypto panic. So a downward movement can be the reason of quitting the crypto market.

Unfortunately, anywhere money is involved, sentiment is present and there is nothing to reverse that. The stock market, the fired market, the commodity market, every market in short, sentiments is there because that's the point where there are winners who are going home with profit while others are going to lose. In other to be on the winning side, then sentiment becomes an issue to put into consideration. That is the current position of the market in which the end of that is not in sight
I think it is a good time to be involved in crypto right now. People who have been invested for years already cashed out, at least most of them. The people who got in last year when they heard about it already cashed out and ran away with the loss and just gave up.

Right now we are in a point where bitcoin is incredibly cheap and still known all around the world. Even the old people know what bitcoin is and heard about it, right now there is no going back to the times where bitcoin was unknown and the little people knew about it was that it was used on darknet to buy drugs or something.

Right now we are known a lot and we are known as a professional investment method like buying a stock and so forth. Hence I doubt there will be a better time in history after today that will be better to invest.

Investor sentiment always influenced by news. If negative news come to market and investor believe on it, negative sentiment will bring drop the price and market value. I am think in any market, news hold important role in market sentiment

This is what is happening now, the bad news is that the crypto price is still down, the good news is that for only a moment the price rises and falls again. The crypto market's sentiment is very fast and panic and many give up.

I think the sentiment factor in cryptocurrency market right now is bad news. If bad news or fake news come to market, most people panic and selling their coin at cheaper price. Its affecting others coin and market cap value.
Cryptocurrency market still vulnerable i think because in many country, cryptocurrency not regulated by government and many people still thinking cryptomarket is a buble

News very influence cryptocurrency investor sentiment. When there are many good news that spread then bitcoin price will fall because usually good news indicates that the bitcoin is adoption grow faster and bad news indicates that bitcoin adoption will be slower. The other factor is the characteristics of bitcoin itself wgich is really good as medium of exchange, I think that's it.

It is getting less and less hopeful which is the trouble we have right now. People do not really trust bitcoin price anymore and even if the price shot 10% upwards today, no one would be really happy about it since it dropped so much.
If someone does not trust an asset in its future growth or development - why would they invest in it the first place? Either they were misinformed or someone roped them into a vicious cycle of event. For bitcoin that definitely not the case. Its fully transparent and immutable, irreversible currency.

Quote
I doubt investors will be happy until they see a reversing of the trend and that could only happen with couple of weeks of green in bitcoin world.
A couple of green weeks after 3-4months of bear run? Let alone stagnant periods before this? Seems plausible.

Quote
If we can move towards over 4 thousand dollars until next week and go up a thousand dollars each week after that until the price hits seven thousand dollars or so the sentiment will be bad. If something major like that happens than people will flock back to bitcoin and just because of the sheer volume required for something like that we will see more and more people invest and carry it themselves.
A carried over pumping would definitely pump the price to a bigger value. But the point is everyone is waiting for that spark which is going to ignite the mountain of gunpowder which is heaping up. Is it going to be the next ETF on February? Nobody knows for now. Cheesy

All the times we are having such people into this space but they could never get any chances to impact on the continuous progress of evaluation of this crypto space. I mean to say we should never bother them as they do not have any significance with respect to cryptos.
They do have some effect on the newbies who are entering the market. They get scared of listening to their words because newbies are naive and I dont blame them because it does take sometime to get accustomed to the constant bombardment of FUD in this forum along with propaganda altcoin shills not to mention the youtube shills promoting bitconnect like scams and not being punished in any way.

Those people will continue to make money by using their unscrupulous methods but the suffering is the new people entering the space. Which is why I try to make them aware whenever I come in contact with them.

Investors and speculators usually have some differences in their mentality. Long-term investors may feel anxious when the market falls sharply. Short-term speculators are the most tragic. Their emotions are in sync with the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin rises speculators excited, speculators with bitcoin falling will feel sad or even desperate.
Of course, they do have conflicts in their thoughts about the value of Bitcoin or any coin in the market and this is the reason many investors do not follow anyone like a speculator. There are many famous but even they do not give good authentic information.

I believe these definition of investor sentiment also applicable for crypto investors. As of now I'm seeing people from both these classifications. When more people joining into one side, we can see that will be impacting into the conditions of crypto market. Basically I am into the side of willing to take risk as I am believing in to the futures of cryptos.

These are also the same people who start calling crypto as a scam because they lost money due to their own mistakes because its easy to blame others for your mistakes. Those guys who stick around would realize the potential gains for patience.

This is right. Some might respond in a worst tone which often leads to the panic selling of the coins and others might be more business minded who would rather keep the coins until the value is recovered again.

Emotions and market ups and downs are linked to the funds invested by investors. If investors invest heavily in the cryptocurrency market and the cryptocurrency market falls sharply, then investors will be crazy, but if it is a good trader, they will wait patiently. Poor people who invest in cryptocurrencies are often unable to sleep.
I would not call them investors like I have often said in the past. These people who cant handle their own assets in terms of risk management and capital diversification and not qualified to be labelled as investors. They are going to dig their own grave if they are going to panic and lose money and they deserve it.

I can't speak on the behalf of everyone involved in bitcoin or crypto but I can tell my own story about it. I have been involved with crypto for over 5 years now (closer to 7 years actually) and I have seen everything that ever happened here that matter.

Before 2012 there wasn't much story to be told so I was at the beginnings of all the drama of mt.gox even when they were still cashing out customers money and was working.

All these years had one thing in common, bitcoin is decentralized and definitely not to be controlled by any one person which caused a lot of scamming and shady stuff happening without any proper problem. There was a lot of websites and companies that took thousands of bitcoins and ran with it.

The only difference right now is that people see bitcoin is a commodity that they can make money and back in those days nobody really cared what the price was, people were caring about when they will be capable of buying stuff with their bitcoins, they cared about the adoption, they didn't want nasdaq or bakkt, they wanted wallmart and apple to accept it. That is the biggest difference on investor sentiment on cryptocurrency between now and back than.

Everything depends on bitcoin, that is what causes the market sentiment to go up or down dramatically, just look at its current price and you will understand why everyone is so depressed since they are all losing money with the crash, so when looking for explanations about the market of cryptocurrencies do not complicate yourself, just look at bitcoin and you will know the truth of this market.
Yes.It's all about the nature of bitcoin.Investors sentiments about the cryptocurrency market gradually becomes higher when they really don't understand the nature of crypto in the first place. It has its high volatility which will make the market goes up or down.So never expect to see the market always in an upward trend.Learn to understand it from the start.
If people did what you are suggesting we will not have as much volatility since investors will understand that what we are seeing is nothing but a natural decrease in the demand that is being amplified by the whales to try to make even more people to sell their coins for a bad price and they are using this opportunity to try to get even more coins.

news may also affect the market, indeed investors are now smart they can know which news is true or just FUD, but indeed the impact of the news is very directly hit with the emotions of every investor, just as the current btc price drops, according to one source affected by the news will be a statement from Benolt coeure and head of BIS Agustine carsters, besides that there was news about civil sanctions from US stock exchange authorities for holders of bitcoin, and that was enough to make things chaotic and make old investors panic.
That is something a little bit hard not to experience in a volatile market, but generally, the easiest way you can at least overcome any emotional sentiment, is to understand that it is normal for the market to always behave this way most of the time, but it is left for you to understand that you are really focused on the long run and you understand there is potential in what you are holding as an investor. Cryptocurrency market is still very young, and volatility is something that we cannot run away from at this stage.

This market is still very new and trading volume is not large so I believe that its future development potential is very good. Put your trust in cryptocurrency because I think it will be a huge financial market in the future.
There has been a lot of buybacks from these levels, I think that would indicate that the price drop actually reached to a point where rich people started to see this as a big opportunity. Do not forget someone who can buy 10 thousand bitcoins usually doesn't need the money all that quickly.

If you and me invest into bitcoin and suddenly have to pay something urgently or have some emergency hospital trouble and what not, we may cash out our bitcoins to pay for those however someone that buys 10 thousand bitcoins usually doesn't need that money that much. Which tells me all those bitcoins bought and withdrawn from exchanges belongs to super rich people who decided that this is the best price to get bitcoin and now storing that coin someone like their ledger waiting for the storm to end.
Everyone is either scared or stressed, there is no other explanation for this. Market is incredibly fragile and the volume is SO low that anyone who wants to rule the market can and right now we are at the hands of a rich person who loves to see bitcoin burn while his own shit coin is going up with that money. He keeps on selling his bitcoins while buying his own shit coin in order to make the price higher and will work to make that one the "real" bitcoin.

The only good news about this is that he will not have too many bitcoins left after all of this hopefully and when he is out of ammo and his coins still sucks and only owned by him, there will be a world where no one is a big threat. We need to start figuring out a way to stop all this monopoly on bitcoin like the miners and rich folks who try to ruin it just for their own sake. That doesn't look decentralized at all.

in my opinion, many factors that influence market sentiment include the behavior of investors themselves who cannot carry out the risk as well as possible, as when prices drop they immediately sell panic automatically that will make prices fall even deeper. Bad news that befalls the crypto currency can also be the cause of the news market sentiment, of course, made by certain groups with the aim of dropping prices then they buy it at a cheap price
although many know that strategy, there are still many traders who fall into the trap. therefore psychological resilience is very important to deal with market conditions where anything can happen

I am sure that the crypt market is regulated and controlled by whales.
It is not regulated but manipulated by whales. There is no denying that. One should learn to use that to your own advantage.

Quote
We are small traders and investors of the crypto market cannot in any way influence the price movements of the main crypto currencies.
Maybe you cannot manipulate the market directly but you can indirectly. For example, if you are able to get a cryptocurrency related social media account active and gather a number of followers, you could use that as a potential pump and dump group. Its not something easy to do but its possible.

Quote
For the whales, this is a great game in which they will always win. And we play in the casino on the “American Roulette” - those who managed to go to the cashier with a win that well done and calm, who continue to play that nerves jump and adrenaline plays in blood.
Not a proper analogy I would say, there are people who are waiting with patient nerves for years for low price to buy in. Nothing bad in that.
Agreed, timing for orders is important but regretting your own choice is not a good thing. Be brave and firm to your beliefs.

Today, the mood of investors in the crypto-currency market is increasingly becoming negative. After breaking the bitcoin price at $ 5800 we have seen a great reduction and the absence of back shopping.
Investors are very afraid to invest serious money in this market because the big risks and lack of prospects in the near future are very frightening for them!
Decisions on important events for the crypto market are further postponed and the mood worsens. If we go at this rate, the money will not soon come to this market and he will Wake up again. The bottom has not yet reached It and scares investors.

I am believe negative news give big sentiment to investor. Negative news bring most cryptocurrency price drop more than 70% in this year. But recently, many positive news come to market and i am believe market condition will recover again.
This year the negative news affected the market more than what the positive news that was supposed to drive the market. There was no big ETF properly allowing crypto. People became enthusiastic but it was premature because they were all rejected. This lead to some anger in the market for some investors coming into the crypto market as newbies.

cryptocurrency developtment still on early stage, so only few investors put their huge money in any projects.but when it adopted and legalize by government daily trading volume will rise sharply.
Development is still early agreed but dont expect of even hope governments to legalize trading. Crypto is unregulated and people can manipulate markets easily.

It is not a good time to sell right now. I know investors are more into getting their cash in hand because when someone wants to withdraw their investment it wouldn't be easy for the investors to get back anything worthy and mostly would cause a big loss in their investments which would also result with them not investing into bitcoin right now.

If an investor leaves right now they will both have a big loss and a trouble of believing in bitcoin ever again, if however they stay a bit longer and hopefully bitcoin goes up at least they will start to trust bitcoin once again and that way they could even reinvest their savings into bitcoin. I know bitcoin may not be the most linear of investments but it is honestly the highest potential investment you could hope for.

The whole bitcoin system started based on the sentiment. Also as the volatile nature of crypto kept the people interested, but the current stability is making the old investors bored
This market is still very new and trading volume is not large so I believe that its future development potential is very good. Put your trust in cryptocurrency because I think it will be a huge financial market in the future.
I am not too sure what everyone else thinks but there are only 2 types of investors we have to think about. One is the small guys like me, some goes from couple hundred to even couple thousand, those are the people who make up a bulk amount of the volume when there are no big huge whales going around causing havoc in the market. The second one is those whales like Craig and what not, people who have the option and ability to destroy the markets in a day or time to time get the market rising up.

The small ones are probably scared and worried, I know I am, we don't know what is happening and what will happen and it looks so dangerous right now, I feel anxious about getting rid of all this stuff. Whales probably feel fine, they have done this before and they have enough money to wait this out until the end and still see the light at the end of the tunnel, they can wait because they are rich. We may not be able to afford to wait.

Best,

ycollin

I think you missed a last item. that is psychological analysis. Psychology is really very important in this market. Here we do not call the token as per stock because it does not make sense. Even if you hold more than 36% of your token supply, you still have no voting rights at the company. This is a pumping and dumping market.

I think the main factors that cause different moods in the cryptocurrency market is the news background that surrounds the entire cryptocurrency industry. The more positive the news, the more investors come to the cryptocurrency and the number of hodlers increases.
Yes, I agree with you, news play a very important role in the crypto market. Due to the bad news, the investors being afraid to make an investment in the crypto market. But ultimately when any good news has come about the market then investors will start to come forward to make an investment in it.

cryptocurrency developtment still on early stage, so only few investors put their huge money in any projects.but when it adopted and legalize by government daily trading volume will rise sharply.

Good luck on your Masters thesis, those things really are a pain in the behind to make and your chosen study is almost bloody difficult to consider. Eitherway, my response will be that i think crypto currency has a huge potential and could possibly be the only currency we will use so long as adoption happens ASAP

as for other altcoins it is depending on the  coin itself. i would disagree with saying ETH is not manipulated, in fact i believe it is one of the most manipulated coins in the market at the moment mainly because it is centralized and the foundation's livelihood depends on ethereum's livelihood and that is (in the current newbie-filled market) determined by having high market cap which is guaranteed by having a huge supply and a rather high price.

That doesn't make sense. It might benefit the Foundation if ETH has a high price. It doesn't follow that ETH would have a high price just because it would benefit the Foundation. Surely I would benefit from having a million bucks dropped in my lap, but I don't see that happening.

The point is that high market cap coins with globally distributed markets are really not easy to manipulate. There's too much order book depth and would-be manipulators can easily be run over by cross-exchange arbitragers.

Ethereum actually has really deep books. I feel bad for any whale trying to manipulate it because they're going to lose all their coins. It really isn't a "pump and dump" coin at all......that's just something that Bitcoin people like to say as an insult. If you want to ride pump and dumps, you need to look at markets that are 1000x smaller.
After all, with the size of the marketcap, it will make it difficult for  pope to act, of course their capital is insufficient financially. but sometimes news can move it. so fomo happened and investors came

There is trouble abrewing
in my experience it is hard to say because this market is still pretty small and very manipulated. and that makes everything near impossible to analyze including the investor sentiment.
for example time and time again we have seen altcoins that had no reason to rise, go up a lot because someone was pumping them and that pump changed the sentiment to buy because many investors are well aware of the situation and want to join in and make the quick profit.

I don't think Bitcoin is particularly manipulated. I've found that reading sentiment and commitments of traders is really useful for BTC, just like it is in the "real" markets like forex. To a large extent, this extends to ETH and the more liquid altcoins.

Much of the altcoin market is very "pumpable" though, because liquidity is so low. I'd say the less liquidity a market has, the less useful sentiment reading is. With low volume / low market cap coins, a single whale can completely change the available supply and demand. That's not possible with larger coins.

what i said above is about the cryptocurrency market in general not bitcoin market. otherwise i agree with you that bitcoin price is not particularly manipulated although manipulations exist in bitcoin always attempting to sway the price in their own favor.

I want also to use my knowledge in cryptocurrency in order to integrate it in the field of teaching specially, when I will make my first thesis whenever I proceed to my next degree. I just to emphasize that because I think it will become a successful master thesis for the OP. Investors are triggered in the market condition nowadays. Many people tend to quit in trading because they does not get anything in this industry.

A study on business school claims that the whims and caprices of investor dictates cryptocurrency prices.the study, also claims that economic indices do not play a significant role in sharing the market dynamic.

I guess it is definitely a risky environment to keep your investments in crypto, I have always found the best sides of crypto and used them such as getting paid in bitcoin for my work and paying other people to do stuff for me and building business ideas around crypto and so forth but the "investment" part of crypto has always scared me, I have been invested in it for over 6 years now however everyday I have lived with the fear of my money going up in smoke and when I wake up I will lose half of my investments.

It actually happened, I have invested in some stuff for a time and all of them got "hacked" or "scammed" or whatever and I have lost money, most recent being bitgrail and it goes waaay long ago if I have to talk about the first time but in general I stopped doing that because even having some money aside for some coins is now risky enough because even the coin owners could just take the funds they have and leave with a scam coin behind them.

In my opinion, that is the optimistic sense of the stock. I think that many traders should put their trust in their portfolios in this market. I think this is a market of belief, we need to give it confidence and be loyal to it. A good result will happen in the future if every investor understands this.

"STAY IN THE DARK"
I think there is no difference between the cryptocurrency market sentiment and other investment places such as stock exchanges or stocks. Each investor or trader will have a different view when predicting the direction of prices, they will predict the direction of the price after seeing the price conditions at that time.
There is a difference when it comes to crypto currency investment because they just invest on the speculation basis and technical analysis which maybe completely wrong at any time because of volatile market whereas the stocks can be analysed by comparing the world economic range and sometimes the prices of fuel changes will leads to change in the stock value right?!

Each investor or trader will have a different view when predicting the direction of prices, they will predict the direction of the price after seeing the price conditions at that time.

As the price conditions if continue to decrease, they will assume the bearish market will come, and otherwise, when prices continue to increase, each investor/trader will assume that the market will experience a bull run.

However, in dealing with bearish and bull markets every investor/trader will take different actions, for those who are always dissatisfied with the decisions they made when the market is bearish then what they did is wait and hope the market will increase and also when the bull market came they will wait and hope prices will continue to rise so as they forget the targets they had before.

This is indeed an interesting topic as there are multiple which lead to high sentiment such as and not being limited to, price hikes, postive news from the media regarding it which fuel the price hikes etc. It's important to note that if any big country gives the green signal for bitcoins its sentiment will rise. as of now, sentiments are bullish due to imminent pending approval of bitcoins. But we'll know for sure in the future if anything changes on the matter.

I think the overall sense of optimism and pessimism drives a investor's sentiment. Any positive prediction or good news will have a huge impact on a person optimistic about crypto's future. And quiet the opposite for a pessimist person.

Hello ycollin,

I have been in crypto for a while by now. So I am in the flash back when you asked this questions.

First of all it was about the money. Yes it is. I am the same as every newbie here which thought of a higher compensation in just a little amount of time but as I get more knowledge about every crypto currency specially bitcoin, I learned it should not be the way it is.

USD is a currency and Bitcoin is also one. So what are we trying to get if both are currencies? Mostly we want a paper in our hands just so to say I have money. A physical thing.
Bitcoin changed the way I think. I don't need that physical thing just to say I am rich. Because I know I am and will be more once every nation adopts the crypto world.

Now about the market. As I said, it needs adoption. This dumps and pumps will just happen over and over since people are still thinking to have that "$". But in time, they will also ask themselves, Why?! BTC is also a currency. No need to exchange it.

Sentiment tends to lag behind price.

When a market is bottoming out and beginning to enter a bull market, investors are usually still stuck in a bear market mentality. Most will assume that bounces = selling opportunities and that the market won't recover. This sentiment implies that investors have mostly been shaken out, and the market is heavily short. This supply/demand dynamic creates lots of "price chasing" as the bull market confirms. All the sellers and shorters need to repair their positions. This creates a feedback loop where higher prices beget higher prices.

The opposite happens at market tops. Everyone is bullish at the top, buoyant and expecting continued gains. When the market starts crashing, general sentiment is "hopeful" or in denial about the possibility the rally is over. This causes investors to hold through declining prices. Like the bottom sellers mentioned above, these underwater bulls continually pressure price downwards as they capitulate and exit the market.

The speculation in the price of bitcoin ,still ruin the bitcoin.Their will be some optimistic and pessimistic thought in money dealing matter. It also will be their in stock market. Most of the holding traders will be the positive thinker. The short term panic seller will be the negative thinker in trading.Use to buy bitcoin at low price and sell at high price. It's easy way to get profit.

The volatility...
Giving excitations to people agree to take the risk to speculate, and creating a positive or negative feeling on the market.
You can have a group of people living only to see Bitcoin with a high volatility, it's what entertains them and often how they make them money. You can have another group of people who the volatility will give them a positive feeling (to them to make some money) or a negative (since they think they won't make a profit)

I would say my sentiment are all about the money that I am putting into it. This money is attached to me that way because I have hard earned it earlier and thus I know the importance of it. Whenever I go and invest my money into crypto world which is far more sensitive than anything then it creates a feeling inside my mind which drives me crazy. This is a sentiment where I get many questions in my mind, like what if I loose my investment, what if things go wrong with the project in which I have invested. I have always try to overcome this sentiment so that I can relax and make investment freely. But as you know most of the time our mind takes over things.
That is what all of us will said but the reality is that investors sentiment do affects all of us as investor.  The market is bearish now because of the forces of demands and supplies and the market factors that affect price of any assets is sentiment.  When people are not putting money and you are the only one trading you will make loses.
This time last year I know how people were happy investing into cryptocurrencies market and that investments was translated into high price. But most people now are getting discouraged because of the way big investors has move the fund from the market.

Earlier this year, there was a poll conducted in an attempt to quantify the percentage of population with current ownership of bitcoin or another crypto currency.

Poll numbers appeared to correlate a higher percentage of bitcoin (or crypto currency ownership) with higher inflation rates and greater risk of economic crisis. Nations like turkey and venezuela which are known to have high rates of fiat currency inflation reported some of the highest rates of crypto ownership in terms of population.

In terms of social issues, the consensus says it takes a long time for people to adjust and adopt change. When it was discovered that fruits could stave off scurvy for sailors on ships, it still took more than 10 years for people to accept that this worked. Its natural to expect a lengthy transition period between current markets and broader acceptance of crypto. With the main determining factor possibly being inflation rates and concern over economic crisis.

FYI, I've posted a topic about cryptocurrencies' return a few months ago, but failed to get a response because of shitposters fiesta.

Anyway...

The journal by Wang & Vergne was published in 2017, I don't know if it's still suitable for the present date. However, this is not about the market as a whole but about some sample coins.
http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0169556

Here are the findings:
Quote
1. Technological development is positively and significantly associated with weekly returns.
This is related to GitHub activities (more is better).

Quote
2. The public interest is negatively and significantly associated with weekly returns.
The funny thing is that if a coin got more buzz, the relationship would be negative.

Quote
3. Liquidity is positively and significantly associated with returns.
More liquidity means more return. Maybe this is why coins want to be listed in the top exchanges.

If your research about the market as a whole, I think it still related to the macroeconomics, since cryptocurrencies price movement seems to conform with stocks price movement.

Just tentative ideas for proxies:
- Investor forecast on USD interest and the inflation rate;
- Investor forecast on US GDP growth.

But, I don't know if you should use global data or only US data. Maybe only US data is enough since the last major drop (10/11/2018) in US stock market seems to match with the crypto market.

- Number of ICOs;
- Trading volume.

But you might want to sort shitcoins out of your sample since I believe it will ruin your statistical analysis Grin

Hey Ycollin you have taken an interesting topic and I hope you write a good thesis, now coming back to your question there're multiple factors which lead to sentiments being high some are expected price hike, or a positive news which shall fuel price hikes, a prominent person throwing his weight behind cryptos, or a big organisation adopting it. It's pertinent to note that if any big country's government issues a positive signal for bitcoins its sentiment rises, as of now sentiments are bullish due to imminent pending approval of bitcoins etf.
