Holding alt coins with low trading volume is extremely risky. As long as people are willing to spend BTC buying alt coins they have value. But if/when the buy orders go away the coins become worthless.
worthless crap coins that went up by 10x or more,
are like rocks that are dropped in the ocean,
and they fall to the bottom from where they came

I don't quite see this, the altcoins are becoming more like a true virtual commodity than Bitcoin is meaning the importance of these coins having bitcoins payment infastructure is becoming unnecessary. There simply a vehicle to hold value like a silver, rhodium, palladium coin etc. with the added bonus in a few clicks conversion back to btc is simple and easy.
