I have two 4x5830 rigs, both on Corair 750w PSUs, they each pull about 750w with a Kill-a-watt meter.  I've been running them like this for about a month, no issues.

You might want to look at adding a CX430 or such to this - I had a (probably identical) Corsair 750W pulling 800W at the wall and it was just a little too much for it.  It handled it OK, still ran all of my components without any issues, but the PSU got really warm and started making an audible 'click' every few seconds.  Removing one of my cards from it's rails got it back to it's happy place.

You're probably just fine at 750W at the wall, especially if it's not getting too warm, but just forewarning you might be near it's limits.

I have a 850 watt corsair power supply and it runs my system with 3 5830s, five 2 terabyte hds, blu-ray burner, & 6 fans & some usb devices with no problem.

1000W is an overkill for 4x 5830

I use Corsair HX850 for 4x 5870 oc'd @ 860Mhz Core & 300Mhz Memory = 850W maximum from the wall.
It isn't overkill... 4 5830's overclocked to 1030/350 draws around 900 watts

Currently running 4 of these.... (5830's O/C to 990mhz) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102946
on one of these 1KW power supplies....http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182188.

Been running 24/7 for 10 + days now with zero problems.

My 4x5830's pull 620W-640W from the wall (Kill-A-Watt) running 998/300.

I have 4 overclocked 5870s running comfortably on an 850Watt PSU, and I can say that I woul be comfortable assuming they consume 25watts more than 5830, so a good 750 would do fine if you underclock the memory. An investment into a $15 meter never hurts though.

This +1.

Cheers,

I have a meter and a healthy over clock for the 5830 requires about 190 watts each so you definitely shouldn't put that on a 750 watt. If your running stock core clock and lower the mem speed you can get away with this but otherwise you cant.

I actually own 4 5830's and a kilowatt meter. Heavily overclocked 330+ megahash per sec the rig only pulls 880 watts. If you get a really good gold certified psu you'll be fine with 1000W. If you have a crappy psu you might need to lower the oc a little.

I have four of them in a couple of rigs and run them at 900/300 my meter tells me less than 700w, am using a Corsair 850tx version 2 with the rigs works perfectly fine for them.
That seems a bit low even for a low oc. That's with 4 5830's? Either way it just shows 1000W is safe for any level of overclock.

That is what the meter tells me something like 696 just enough under to say it is and yes quality single rail 1000w is way more than enough overkill in fact.

700 Watts read from a meter is wall-draw power, meaning the system is consuming significantly less. Even a gold rated PSU would be drawing closer to 600Watts at that level.

As with almost all threads, the amount of wattage needs to be sufficient for the power draw, and beyond that the importance is to get a quality unit, more than more watts. I have 4 overclocked 5870s running comfortably on an 850Watt PSU, and I can say that I woul be comfortable assuming they consume 25watts more than 5830, so a good 750 would do fine if you underclock the memory. 1000W is plenty.  My rigs are running 2x 5830s and 2x 6950s, my 5830s all run at 1020/300 (~320mh/s), and the 6950s are bumped to 885 (from 830 stock).  Both cards are using stock voltages.

Each rig has a 750W for 3 of the cards and a 430W powering the system + 4th card.  All said and done I pull 800W exactly at the wall - ~400 on the 750W PSU and 200 on the 430W.

With heavy overclocks, and especially with voltage increases, you'll push 85% of that 1000W which should be pretty comfortable for the PSU and put you in a good spot for power efficiency.

Short answer, yes unless the rest of your system is drawing considerable power.

I'm running at 1030/350 and it isn't overkill for that high of an overclock. It all depends on how high the guy wants to push the overclock.

good rule of thumb is 150 for system and 200w per card so 3x200 is 600+150 puts your at 750. i would move into the 800+w rage. remember you are not getting the full 700 even with a bronze rated psu. I like to be over over with power b/c its a pain to troubleshoot if that is in question. Of course like the post above you could get two of these and that should be plenty Smiley

You can always add a second psu...I bought a cheap 750w with dual rails and it wouldn't support 3 5850s so I just added anther psu I had laying around

I think it will depend on the 1000w. it should but if you get the crappy one i got then no. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159101 you will need a perhaps a better one. i ran 4 5830s for about 4 hours and my psu started smelling like burning. Smiley so i rma ed it and added a 430 to power two of the 4 cards. My setup is standard except with 2 80mm fans and 8gb instead of 2gb.

I am currently running 2 5830's and have another 2 coming in soon. Will a well rated 1000W be enough?
