If you are not familiar with smart contracts, yea, it can be seen as a very smart idea. But there are dozens of coins in the market that can replace ETH. So, the ERC-20 is good, but it can easily replace.
ERC20 i think that is not a unique token, because erc20 blockchain or Ethereum blockchain is used so much many time and have many token with that blockchain.
so, if this is a unique token, i said is not because it is too much.

Erc20 is a unique token that are control and run in ETH blockchain with its smart contract .
It can be store in their unique wallet that are compatible with erc20 , so you need to be very careful when sending or receiving any token from that erc20 has any mistake regard the wallet will lead to lost of your token.

If I got you well then I'd say that every thing ran on the blockchain technology is very much traceable and transparent and ERC-20 token is one or those ran in the blockchain technology so I would not say it is unique in terms of being a coin in the cryptocurrency world
Using Ethereum base doesn't mean all the ERC-20 tokens are copy-paste products as far as I know.

Yes, every tokens are decided by it's unique contract address. They behave according to their individual rules but for transactions, require Ethereum as gas for traveling in the block chain.
